Job description

Position Summary:

The Senior Computational Specialist provides high-level support to scholars utilizing NYU’s extensive research computing infrastructure and services in their research. The individual in this role works directly with researchers, providing in-depth consultation to help solve computational problems, design algorithms, develop and build applications, and advise researchers on configurations, practices and policies that may improve application performance. This position develops training material, conducts training sessions, and provides online documentation to assist NYU scholars and their collaborators to efficiently utilize HPC technologies and utilize AI tools in their research and teaching. The Senior Computational Specialist is crucial in defining and building new research services for the next-generation of NYU’s infrastructure, in order to enhance, improve service, help build partnerships, and add capacity and capabilities. When needed, the specialist works closely with NYU IT teams to provide ongoing testing, benchmarking, support, troubleshooting, and maintenance of HPC computing resources and software.

Qualifications:

Required Education:
Master's Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related field, with strong scientific computing emphasis required.

Preferred Education:
Doctoral Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Required Experience:
5+ years of working with HPC programming, job scheduling, compilers, performance libraries etc. Experince programmingin high level languages, like C++, Fortran, Python, Java, Matlab. Experience with High Performance computing infrastructure workflows, resource managers, usage and systems’ health monitoring, and data transfer and sharing tools. Working experience with Big Data and knowledge of big data infrastructure. Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation and written and verbal communication skills, including documentation and customer support.

Preferred Experience:
7+ years of work experience, having a record of successes in programming, architecting, deploying and using HPC applications. Experience working in an academic research environment.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Excellent programming and math skills. Proven expertise with the Linux OS and bash scripting. Knowledge of CPU and GPU offerings, HPC and AI offerings in public cloud providers (e.g. GCP). Experience with design, building and deploying containers (Docker, Singularity) in an HPC environment. Drive to continually expand knowledge in the areas of new technological developments and trends. Ability to present technical concepts in a clear manner to customers through demos, proposals and presentations. Experience with computational support for academic research. Experience programming API access.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Having a quantitative background (probability, statistics). Experience with GPU programming in an HPC environment. Experience with managing structured and unstructured data. Desire and ability to write blog or white paper content on relevant technical subjects. Experience with parallel programming models (e.g., use of OpenMP, MPI, CUDA). Experience with parallelization of serial computational applications, data analytics.

Additional Information:

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $120,000.00 to USD $140,000.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
