Position Summary

The Binding Authority Underwriter is responsible for developing and growing a new High-Net-Worth Personal Lines book of business by assessing complex insurance risks, building strong relationships with retail agents, and delivering tailored coverage solutions. This role evaluates and underwrites new business opportunities, markets submissions to carrier partners, prepares competitive quotations, and manages the underwriting process through policy issuance and servicing.

We are seeking a relationship-driven Binding Authority Underwriter to build and grow a new High-Net-Worth Personal Lines book of business. This role is responsible for evaluating and underwriting complex personal lines risks, developing retail agency relationships, marketing submissions to carrier partners, negotiating terms and pricing, and driving profitable premium growth.

The ideal candidate will bring experience in Personal Lines underwriting, wholesale brokerage, binding authority, or retail agency production and have a proven ability to develop business relationships, generate submissions, and grow a profitable book of business.

This position offers the opportunity to help build a specialty practice focused on high-net-worth individuals and complex personal risk exposures, including luxury homes, high-value automobiles, private collections, yachts, aviation, and excess liability placements.

What will your job entail?

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Risk Assessment

  • Underwrite new business, renewals, endorsements, and complex personal lines risks within established underwriting authority.

  • Analyze exposures, loss history, inspections, valuations, catastrophe exposure, and risk characteristics to determine coverage structure and pricing.

  • Review carrier guidelines and marketplace appetite to identify optimal placement strategies.

  • Prepare competitive quotations and communicate coverage recommendations, terms, and conditions to retail agency partners.

  • Maintain accurate underwriting documentation and file records.

Business Development & Relationship Management

  • Develop, manage, and expand relationships with retail insurance agents, brokers, and carrier partners.

  • Generate new business opportunities through agency prospecting, relationship-building activities, and market development initiatives.

  • Establish a consistent pipeline of new submissions and actively cultivate producer relationships.

  • Identify opportunities to increase premium volume and expand agency partnerships.

  • Represent the organization at agency meetings, networking events, conferences, and industry functions.

Book Growth & Portfolio Management

  • Build a profitable High-Net-Worth Personal Lines portfolio from the ground up.

  • Drive annual premium growth through new business production and agency development efforts.

  • Monitor portfolio performance, profitability, retention, and production metrics.

  • Partner closely with leadership to execute growth strategies and expand market presence throughout targeted territories.

Account Management

  • Manage accounts throughout the policy lifecycle, including endorsements, inspections, renewals, and policy servicing activities.

  • Coordinate with internal teams, carrier partners, and retail agents to ensure timely policy issuance and exceptional customer service.

  • Review inspection recommendations and follow through on underwriting requirements.

  • Historic homes, condominiums, and penthouses

  • Homes owned by trusts, LLCs, and corporations

  • Multiple-home portfolios

  • Course of construction risks

  • CAT-exposed properties

  • Flood, Earthquake, Wildfire, and Hurricane exposures

  • Luxury, exotic, and collector automobiles

  • Private aviation risks

  • Luxury yachts and personal watercraft

  • Fine art, jewelry, wine, and collectible schedules

  • Umbrella and excess liability coverage

  • Employment Practices Liability (EPL)

  • Directors & Officers and Fiduciary Liability for nonprofit organizations

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of insurance experience in one or more of the following:

    • Personal Lines Underwriting

    • Binding Authority Underwriting

    • Wholesale Brokerage

    • Personal Lines Brokerage

    • High-Net-Worth Personal Lines

    • Private Client Insurance

  • Experience developing relationships with insurance agents, brokers, or carrier partners.

  • Experience marketing business to carriers and negotiating coverage solutions.

  • Working knowledge of Personal Lines products and coverages.

  • Demonstrated ability to build, maintain, and grow business relationships.

  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced production environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Wholesale brokerage experience.

  • Experience working with High-Net-Worth or Private Client business.

  • Experience with Scottsdale and other E&S or specialty carrier markets.

  • Knowledge of West Coast Personal Lines markets and catastrophe-exposed risks.

  • Existing retail agency relationships.

  • Proven track record of new business production and premium growth.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

The target salary range for this position is $100,000.00 - $125,000.00 annually.

The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
