Job description

Newsweek is the global media organization that has earned audience time and trust for more than 90 years. Newsweek reaches 100 million people each month with thought-provoking news, opinion, images, graphics, and video delivered across a dozen print and digital platforms. Headquartered in New York City, Newsweek also publishes international editions in EMEA and Asia. 

The Digital Content Editor (Casual) creates, edits, optimizes and publishes digital copy quickly and cleanly in a fast-paced environment. They will be responsible for ensuring Newsweek delivers timely high-quality reporting that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism.

They will have a strong understanding of digital journalism and the needs of a fast-paced newsroom. They will have significant and demonstrable experience in a publishing role at a reputable news organization.  

They will work with, edit and publish directly in Newsweek’s CMS (WordPress experience a plus). They will use new tools and technology to create, edit and review content, as required.  

This is a casual worker role, working remotely. Shifts are mutually agreed. Work will be offered to you on an “ad-hoc” basis. You are free to accept or decline such offers of work. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with editors and reporters in the creation of content. 
  • Edit copy, headlines, images, captions, graphics and video for accuracy, clarity and impact. 
  • Turn source material into original stories through additional reporting, expert comment and context. 
  • Source and prepare relevant images and video, ensuring appropriate verification, rights and credits.  
  • Use audience analytics to inform editorial decisions and improve content reach, engagement and performance. 
  • Provide feedback and guidance to reporters to improve standards. 
  • Work with the social, SEO and multimedia teams to optimize content. 
  • Work accurately under pressure and meet tight publishing deadlines. 
  • Perform any other reasonable duties necessary to meet the needs of the business. 

Qualifications:

  • Significant relevant experience in digital editing and reporting roles. 
  • Strong news judgment across a range of subjects. 
  • Proven record of editing quickly in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Excellent writing, rewriting and copy-editing skills. 
  • Demonstrable knowledge of digital tools or applications including content management systems, SEO, audience analytics and editing assistance software. 
  • Demonstrable knowledge of common IT tools such as the Microsoft suite.
