Job Description

The Senior Mining Engineer will Lead mine planning, design, and optimization activities for mining projects from concept through production. Manage technical studies (PEA, PFS, FS), production schedules, ventilation, and operational improvements. Provide mentorship, oversee contractors, ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and support resource-to-reserve conversion, project economics, and stakeholder engagement

  • Develop and evaluate open-pit mine plans and underground mine designs as a consulting mining engineer.
  • Apply innovative methodologies to conceptual, pre-feasibility, feasibility, and operating mine projects.
  • Prepare and author technical reports, including acting as a Qualified Person (QP) where applicable.
  • Establish, maintain, and strengthen client relationships.
  • Conduct technical and economic evaluations of underground and open-pit mining projects.
  • Participate in project budgeting, including feasibility studies, cash flow analyses, Net Present Value (NPV), and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) assessments.
  • Design and optimize short-term and long-term open-pit mining plans.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and technically sound reports and presentations.
  • Travel to client sites within Canada and internationally for short-term assignments as required.
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of the mining and minerals industry; experience in rock mechanics is considered a strong asset.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including geologists, metallurgists, geotechnical engineers, and environmental specialists.
  • Support business development activities, proposals, and client engagement initiatives.
  • Knowledgeable in Mine Planning Training, Mine Evaluation, Mine Reclamation Planning, Mine Operation Management, Mine Environment Management and Equipment selection

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or a related engineering discipline (e.g., Civil, Mechanical, Process, or equivalent).

Experience

  • Minimum of 15 years of technical experience within the mining industry.
  • More than 10 years of experience in project evaluation, budgeting, and cost estimation from project initiation through completion.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience, with a proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of quality and accountability.
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Additional language proficiency (e.g., French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic) may be required depending on the role and project location.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of mining operations, mine planning, project development, and economic evaluation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Experience with Microsoft Project and Oracle applications is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in one or more mining software packages such as:
    • GEOVIA GEMS
    • Whittle
    • Vulcan
    • Datamine
    • Surpac
    • Micromine
    • Other industry-standard mine planning and resource modeling software

Professional Competencies

  • Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, professional consulting environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing and report preparation.
  • Strong attention to detail and effective time management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team while also performing effectively independently.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and meet demanding project schedules.

  • Ability to read, understand, and follow work instructions safely, accurately, and efficiently.
  • Willingness to work extended hours when required to meet project deadlines.
  • Availability to travel periodically to SGS offices, client sites, and project locations within Canada and internationally.
  • Commitment to full compliance with SGS Health & Safety policies, the Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct standards.
  • May be assigned responsibility for special projects, strategic initiatives, or other ad hoc assignments as required.

Salary: $61.55 to $71.80 hourly
