Job description

Commercial Rack Refrigeration Service Technicians

  • Must currently live within approximately 40 miles of Raleigh, North Carolina, or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance.

Multiple Experience Levels

Watson Refrigeration is hiring Commercial Rack Refrigeration Service Technicians at multiple skill levels. We welcome applicants ranging from developing technicians with hands-on rack experience to highly experienced senior and lead technicians.

Candidates must have previous experience working with commercial refrigeration rack systems. Position, responsibilities, and compensation will be determined based on experience, technical ability, certifications, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

Depending on experience and position, responsibilities may include:

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain commercial refrigeration rack systems.

  • Perform preventive maintenance and emergency service on supermarket and other large commercial refrigeration equipment.

  • Troubleshoot compressors, condensers, evaporators, cases, controls, electrical components, valves, refrigerant circuits, and related equipment.

  • Identify refrigerant leaks, make repairs, evacuate systems, and properly charge equipment.

  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints, and manufacturer specifications.

  • Use diagnostic tools to identify electrical, mechanical, and refrigeration system failures.

  • Work with electronic controls, energy management systems, and rack controllers.

  • Replace or repair compressors, motors, contactors, relays, valves, piping, and other system components.

  • Complete service documentation accurately and communicate findings and recommendations to customers.

  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, equipment, and assigned inventory.

  • Follow EPA regulations and all company and customer safety procedures.

  • Participate in on-call coverage and respond to emergency service needs as required.

  • Work independently while communicating effectively with dispatch, management, customers, and other technicians.

  • Experienced technicians may lead complex repairs and train or mentor developing technicians.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous hands-on experience servicing commercial refrigeration rack systems.

  • EPA Universal Certification.

  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and the ability to meet company insurance requirements.

  • Working knowledge of commercial refrigeration principles and components.

  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration system problems.

  • Ability to use refrigerant gauges, meters, recovery equipment, vacuum pumps, leak-detection tools, and other standard service equipment.

  • Ability to read electrical diagrams and equipment schematics.

  • Strong problem-solving and customer service skills.

  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field.

  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, ladders, and required personal protective equipment.

  • Ability to work flexible hours and participate in an on-call rotation.

Experience Levels Considered

Candidates may be matched with an appropriate position based on their experience:

  • Developing Rack Technician: Some hands-on commercial rack experience with the ability to complete routine maintenance and repairs with occasional support.

  • Experienced Rack Technician: Able to independently diagnose and repair rack refrigeration, electrical, control, and mechanical issues.

  • Senior or Lead Rack Technician: Advanced rack troubleshooting skills with the ability to manage complex service calls, provide technical guidance, and mentor other technicians.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience servicing supermarket refrigeration systems.

  • Experience with parallel and distributed rack systems.

  • Experience with CO₂, glycol, secondary refrigeration, or other advanced systems.

  • Experience with energy management systems and electronic rack controls.

  • Compressor replacement, piping, brazing, and system start-up experience.

  • Manufacturer or industry-specific refrigeration training.

  • State or local refrigeration, HVAC, electrical, or mechanical licenses where applicable.

  • Previous leadership, training, or mentoring experience.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50–75 pounds, with or without assistance.

  • Ability to climb ladders and work on rooftops or elevated surfaces.

  • Ability to kneel, squat, bend, crawl, push, pull, stand, and work in confined spaces.

  • Ability to work in hot, cold, wet, noisy, and slippery environments.

  • Ability to safely work around pressurized systems, refrigerants, mechanical equipment, and electrical components.

  • Ability to drive for extended periods and travel to customer locations throughout the assigned service area.
