An overview of this role

The Purchase team sits within GitLab's Monetization section and owns the end-to-end purchase experience for all GitLab products, including new purchases, add-ons, upgrades, and self-service promotional discounts. As a Staff Fullstack Engineer, you’ll work across the frontend and backend to build the interfaces customers use to buy and expand GitLab, along with the services that process transactions and integrate with billing and customer relationship management (CRM) systems. Because this work can directly affect revenue and involve confidential or financial information, you’ll use strong technical judgment, roll out changes safely and iteratively, and maintain a high bar for reliability and correctness.

This is a technical leadership role for the Purchase team. You’ll help set the technical direction for a unified purchase flow, mentor other engineers, and partner with Product, Design, Billing, and Support to improve how customers buy and grow with GitLab. This role reports to the Engineering Manager, Purchase.

Some examples of our projects:

  • Unifying separate purchase flows into one consistent purchase experience
  • Building and scaling GitLab Flex subscription flows that let customers reserve spend month to month across seats, artificial intelligence (AI) credits, Runners, and other GitLab capabilities without renegotiating their contract
  • Evolving self-service promotional discounts for existing and prospective customers
  • Modernizing the purchase frontend to improve clarity, accessibility, and conversion
  • Strengthening integrations between the purchase flow and downstream billing and CRM systems for accuracy and resilience

What you’ll do

  • Design and build fullstack features across the purchase journey.
  • Lead technical design for new purchasing capabilities and the unified purchase experience.
  • Partner with Product and Design to turn purchasing requirements into resilient, well-tested technical solutions.
  • Ensure purchase flows integrate correctly and safely with downstream billing and CRM systems.
  • Set and uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, rollout safety, and monitoring.
  • Mentor engineers and review merge requests with thoughtful, constructive feedback.
  • Identify and reduce technical debt and architectural risk in the purchase experience.
  • Participate in incident response for purchase-related issues because of their direct revenue impact.

What you’ll bring

  • Professional fullstack engineering experience across frontend and backend code; our purchase applications use Ruby on Rails and Vue.js.
  • Experience owning technical direction for a product area and driving thorough, iterative solutions.
  • Experience building or maintaining transactional or checkout-style flows, ideally in billing, ecommerce, or subscriptions.
  • A strong bias toward safe, incremental delivery given the revenue and customer impact of this work.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and concisely about complex technical, architectural, and organizational problems.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal English sufficient for success in a remote, largely asynchronous work environment.
  • Alignment with GitLab’s values and a commitment to working in accordance with them.
  • Familiarity with third-party billing or CRM systems, such as Zuora, Salesforce, or Stripe, is a plus.

About the team

We partner with Sales, Finance, Information Technology, and Support to deliver secure and reliable purchasing, billing, provisioning, and utilization workflows. Our broader organization includes the Subscription Lifecycle, Billing Engine, Platform and Infrastructure, Observability, Monitoring and Integrations, and Compliance teams. We work asynchronously, with regular planning and retrospectives and a high bar for ownership across deployments, incident management, testing, and rollout safety.
