Pencil ✏️

Book Publishing

Pencil uses AI to make ads. We want to become the default way ads get made, because AI ads are 2x faster and cheaper to make, and 2x better performing than making them without AI. We’re called Pencil because we believe AI will be a tool for creative people, not a replacement - it may even be as fundamental a tool in the future as the pencil was in the past. Pencil was founded in 2018 with a team from Google, Facebook and Uber with backing from Sequoia and Entrepreneur First. We were acquired by The Brandtech Group in 2023 to pursue a shared vision of bringing GenAI to the Fortune 500.

Job description

About us
At Pencil, we are building the AI Operating System for marketing - the only enterprise platform that aggregates every leading AI model, enforces enterprise-grade governance, and turns creative production savings into media growth. Our work moves brands like Diageo, L’Oréal and Unilever from creative brief to live, on-brand, performance-tested campaigns in minutes - across every market, channel and language - without sacrificing legal, IT or brand control.

Your mission

Bring the craft of advertising together with the speed of GenAI. You build and operate agentic and nodal creative workflows - connecting insight, concept, copy, imagery and video into scalable systems - so our creative teams and clients can move from idea to finished advertising faster, without losing quality or strategic grounding.

You work day-to-day under the direction of Art Directors and Creative Directors, bringing deep hands-on fluency in GenAI tools and workflows to their briefs. You're not setting creative vision - you're the person in the room who knows how to make the technology deliver on it.

This track is for people who go deep on the systems side - building, scaling, and governing the agents, workflows, and creative infrastructure that creative teams and clients rely on. Creative sensibility still matters (they need to understand what "good creative output" means to build for it), but the growth path is technical leadership and architecture, not creative direction.

Key Responsibilities

Discovery & Requirements

  • Meet with clients, creative teams, and stakeholders to understand workflows, challenges, and operational requirements

  • Facilitate workflow audits and capability assessments

  • Identify where GenAI, agents, or automation can meaningfully improve quality, efficiency, or scale

  • Translate operational challenges into technical implementation plans

Agent, Workflow & System Architecture

  • Design and build production-grade prompts, workflows, agents, and creative systems

  • Develop repeatable, scalable frameworks that support multiple brands, markets, and channels

  • Own workflow governance, quality control, and reliability of deployed systems

  • Establish technical standards and best practices for how agents and workflows are built and maintained

Enablement & Technical Adoption

  • Lead training, workshops, and office hours to help teams adopt new systems

  • Own technical documentation, playbooks, and guides for internal and client use

  • Support change management as new tools and workflows roll out

  • Act as the technical authority on GenAI capabilities, limitations, and constraints

Platform Evaluation & Technical Innovation

  • Evaluate emerging AI models, platforms, and tooling for technical fit and scalability

  • Stress-test new capabilities and provide structured, technical feedback to Product and Engineering

  • Identify architectural improvements to existing agents, workflows, and systems

  • Represent the technical roadmap for creative technology internally

What we’re looking for

  • 2-3 years’ experience in advertising creative development

  • Experience with GenAI tools such as ChatGPT, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, Gemini etc.

  • Experience with GenAI techniques such as model selection & prompting

  • Any experience using GenAI to deliver real-world advertising creative

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud

  • Good personal communication and management skills

  • Preference for candidates who have prior agency experience

  • Strong written English skills, allowing you to communicate effectively with clients and team

  • Access to a reliable computer with an internet connection exceeding 40 Mbps

  • A collaborative and team-oriented attitude with optimism about the role of GenAI in creativity

What growth looks like

  • Art Director: owns creative direction across projects, sets visual/conceptual standards, mentors on craft.

  • Creative Director: sets creative vision across accounts or brands, owns creative quality at scale.

  • Head of Creative: sets the creative bar and point of view for the organization.

Your benefits

  • 25 days PTO plus public holidays

  • Remote-first, flexibility to work anywhere from your home country.

  • Health insurance / private medical cover

  • Monthly stipend towards wellness, fitness, and learning and development

  • Enhanced parental leave policies, whether you become a parent through birth, adoption or surrogacy
