Job description

We believe talent deserves a human touch. Your application will be read by an actual person who’s excited to discover the real you.

At New Charter Company, we are seeking a Systems Engineer, Regulated Industries (in other companies this person could hold the title of Systems Engineer CMMC, Regulated Industries Systems Engineer, CMMC Systems Engineer) to design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot secure infrastructure solutions for regulated client environments.

This is primarily a remote role with possibility of some travel, less than 10%.

The role operates within a CMMC-accredited enclave supporting clients that process, store, or transmit Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), and on-site work may require access to enclave facilities governed by NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC Level 2 physical and access controls.

In this role, you will partner with client engagement teams, Service Operations, the Design Team, and Information Security to deliver project, maintenance, and escalated support work across Microsoft 365, Azure, on-premises servers and networks, backup and replication platforms, and CMMC-regulated environments.

To be successful in this role, you will manage complex technical work from implementation through documentation, maintain secure and reliable client systems, and apply NIST SP 800-171, CMMC Level 2, CUI handling, access control, vulnerability management, and disaster recovery requirements. You will communicate clearly with stakeholders, resolve escalated issues, and share knowledge with junior technical team members.

General Job Duties Include

  • Manage on-premises and cloud environments, including software and hardware configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and documentation, in alignment with New Charter specifications and client requirements.

  • Complete project work, service tickets, routine maintenance, and escalated technical support both remotely and on-site.

  • Collaborate with the Design Team on the development, evaluation, and delivery of client scopes of work and quote specifications.

  • Develop and maintain strong expertise in Microsoft 365, Azure, network operating systems, servers, workstations, backup, email, and related network applications.

  • Maintain current and accurate documentation for implementations and changes to client infrastructure.

  • Maintain awareness of insider-threat indicators and follow CUI marking, handling, storage, and destruction requirements in accordance with NIST SP 800-171 and enclave policy.

  • Follow enclave physical and logical access controls, including visitor escort procedures and multi-factor authentication, to safeguard CUI and enclave systems.

  • Configure, monitor, and maintain backup and replication routines; coordinate scheduled disaster recovery drills and maintain supporting documentation.

  • Partner with the Information Security team to remediate vulnerabilities and harden systems in accordance with the vulnerability management program.

  • Provide timely, accurate status updates to clients, managers, engagement teams, and technical support vendors, including Microsoft, in accordance with company procedures.

  • Serve as an escalation resource for difficult or complex technical issues and mentor junior Service Operations team members through knowledge sharing.

  • Follow New Charter and Service Operations policies, standard operating procedures, installation checklists, work-order requirements, and time-entry expectations.

  • Participate in the on-call rotation and provide scheduled or necessary off-hours support.

  • Maintain technical expertise through an agreed education and certification program and stay current on industry developments and emerging technologies.

  • Collaborate on law-enforcement-related projects when voluntarily elected; such work may require additional training and screening consistent with the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy.

  • Attend company and departmental meetings and communicate client issues, project status, scheduling concerns, risks, and resolutions.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Experience

  • Associate’s degree or at least 2 years of network design and installation experience; alternatively, 1 year of network design or installation plus 2 years of software development, help desk support, or hardware maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • At least one industry certification.

  • Working knowledge of network applications and a network operating system, with demonstrated ability to assemble, configure, support, build, and maintain servers and workstations.

  • Working knowledge of NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC Level 2 practices, CUI marking and handling requirements, and enclave access-control procedures.

  • U.S. citizenship is required; dual citizenship is disqualifying. Candidates must successfully complete a background check/personnel security screening consistent with NIST SP 800-171 personnel-security controls and be eligible for a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance.

Preferred Experience

  • Exposure to SIEM and EDR/XDR platforms.

  • Experience with vulnerability management tooling and system-hardening practices.

  • Scripting experience with PowerShell or Python.

  • Familiarity with CMMC assessment activities and NIST SP 800-171 control implementation.

Physical Requirements

  • Correctable vision and full hearing capability, including the ability to distinguish tones.

  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds and stand and/or sit for up to 14 hours per day.

  • Ability to effectively speak, read, and write English.

  • Ability to perform physical field work, including work on ladders and in crawl spaces, attics, construction areas, professional office environments, and LAN/WAN rooms.

  • Availability for some evening and weekend work and overnight travel.

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to New Charter offices and client locations as required.

  • Ability to travel by commercial airline when necessary.

  • Ability to follow company dress policy.

Additional Expectations

  • Demonstrate New Charter’s core values at all times: Passion, Integrity, Accountability, Focus, and Professionalism.

  • Maintain excellent client relationships, professional communication, and productive working relationships with peers.

  • Complete projects, tasks, and responsibilities accurately and professionally while meeting applicable billable-hour expectations.

  • Maintain required industry certifications and document progress toward career goals and objectives.
