Job description

Client

An ICG client operating in the Ed Tech sector, with operations across Australia, the UK and South Africa, is looking for an experienced Data Governance Subject Matter Expert to contribute expert input into the design of its target-state data governance capability.

The client has completed a current state assessment and will next define the target state, roadmap, and indicative investment to build a fit-for-purpose data governance capability that reduces data risk and enables trusted data use for reporting, analytics, AI and business growth — aligned to its business strategy and risk appetite (privacy, cyber, AI) across its global operations.

Role

·       Provide expert data governance input into the design of the target-state operating model, capability framework, required maturity levels and multi-year roadmap.

·       Provide input into the target state design for each data governance capability including describing the people, process and technology required to achieve the target maturity level.

·       Contribute as a supporting SME within an established project team led by the consulting partner — including preparation & an active role in client workshops, presentations and meetings.

·       Facilitate key information gathering sessions to obtain necessary client information and present back for client validation and endorsement.

·       Demonstrate learnings and provide advice from practical experience of leading the implementation of data governance from low levels of maturity including connecting capabilities and maturity levels to the achievement of business objectives.

·       The role does not include project leadership, drafting of collateral (policies, standards, job descriptions, training or technology selection / implementation).

·       Opportunity to continue into future phases of the program as the capability builds out.

Key Deliverables

·       Attend and actively contribute to internal team coordination meetings — support the team to project update status, risks, dependencies, decisions.

·       Contribute SME input into Deliverable— Target State and Roadmap covering: the target-state data governance model (capability framework, target maturity levels, "what good looks like", and a pragmatic view of "good enough" vs ideal); operating model and roles, with practical guidance on how governance embeds into business teams; data enablement capabilities (data quality, sharing across systems, reporting and analytics); technology capability requirements including where existing tooling such as Microsoft Purview applies; a phased 2-3 year roadmap; dependency mapping with adjacent initiatives; and indicative effort, resourcing and cost ranges.

·       Contribute SME input into the Executive Summary deliverable for executive / board audiences.

Skills and experience required

·       8–10 years' experience across data, analytics or data governance.

·       Experience enabling organisations to: (i) improve data quality, (ii) share and use data across systems, (iii) support reporting / analytics / operations.

·       Understands how data and each data capability supports the business goals & objectives: (i) business processes, (ii) customer / student experience, (iii) growth and productization.

·       Hands-on experience implementing: (i) data ownership and stewardship, (ii) data quality practices, (iii) data usage and sharing controls.

·       Defines what is "good enough" vs ideal — proportionate to the organisation's size, maturity and risk appetite.

·       Experience with (i) data governance structures and operating models, (ii) roles (data owners, stewards), (iii) embedding governance into business teams.

·       Understands how governance works in practice, not just frameworks, including interaction with other governance structures and practical methods for adoption.

·       Familiar with: CRM and operational platforms (e.g. Salesforce-type environments), (ii) data integration and reporting layers.

·       Experience working in fragmented or low-maturity environments.

·       Applies recognised frameworks pragmatically — DAMA-DMBOK and ISO data protection standards — as reference points, not prescriptions.

·       Understands the intersections between data governance and AI governance, privacy, cyber security, regulatory compliance and AI-related data risks.

·       Self-starter, pragmatic, clear communicator and a strong collaborator — contributes expertise effectively as a supporting SME within a broader delivery team.
