Camelback Ventures

Non-profit Organizations

Camelback Ventures aims to diversify social innovation, by giving underrepresented, early-stage entrepreneurs access to the tools they need to be successful. Camelback was built with the notion that genius is equally distributed across communities, but access to funding and start-up mentoring is often limited in communities of color and with women. Camelback provides entrepreneurs with greater access to resources. Camelback Ventures awards its fellows with 1:1 coaching, capital (start up funding, up to $40,000) and access to investors and networks (connections). Camelback Fellows, most of whom identify as people of color and/ or female, work in communities across the country. To date, Camelback fellows have built social organizations that have impacted the lives of tens of thousands of young people across the country. Camelback fellows have built STEM-based social mobile games, a charter school network in New Orleans, a mobile app to help recognize strong academic performance, and a platform to help universities track and develop at risk scholarship students. Camelback Fellows have collectively gone on to raise over $14 million in funding. For three years in a row, 3 or more Camelback Fellows have been featured in Forbes 30 Under 30.

Job description

About Camelback Ventures

Camelback Ventures transforms the landscape of entrepreneurship by investing in ventures and leaders who have been systematically excluded from capital and opportunity. We focus on entrepreneurs of color and women, providing not just funding but mentorship, advocacy, and access to the networks that drive meaningful change. Since 2015, Camelback has raised more than $75M and supported 220+ social entrepreneurs through our flagship Camelback Fellowship. Our Fellows have collectively raised more than $400M, earned recognition as Forbes 30 Under 30 honorees, and created transformative impact in communities nationwide—from Eastern North Carolina to Seattle.

The Role

We are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented Director of Finance to strategically develop, maintain, and oversee the systems that support the financial health and long-term sustainability of the organization. As a hands-on financial expert, you will lead budget development and tracking and continually strengthen our core financial systems—spend management, contract execution, and business planning and budgeting. In addition to supervising the Controller, this role plays a strong supporting role in fundraising and strategic planning.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Strategy & Planning

  • Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning, building the analyses and tools that model organizational cash flow, costs, and scenarios.

  • Partner with program and department leaders to support budget ownership, forecasting, and financial decision-making.

  • Prepare, analyze, and present accurate, timely financial reports—including monthly and annual financial statements, budget-to-actual analysis, cash flow plans, and dashboards.

  • Oversee CBV’s externally managed investment portfolio in accordance with the Board-approved investment policy, including coordinating with the investment advisor, monitoring performance, liquidity, fees, compliance, and expected withdrawals, and providing regular reporting to leadership, the Finance Committee, and the Board.

  • Communicate critical financial matters clearly to the CEO, Leadership Team, and Board Finance Committee, and equip leadership with reliable data for planning and decision-making.

  • Oversee the accounting and administration of SAFE agreements and other direct or mission-related investments, including maintaining complete records, monitoring conversion and liquidity events, reviewing valuation and accounting treatment, and coordinating with legal counsel, auditors, and program leadership as needed.

  • Identify revenue gaps and new program costs to inform fundraising strategy and priorities.

  • Support business development and earned-revenue strategies.

Accounting, Audit & Compliance

  • Oversee the monthly close and balance sheet reconciliation process, including ensuring all material accounts are reconciled timely, adequately supported, and independently reviewed.

  • Oversee semi-monthly payroll approval, including payroll changes, gross pay, benefit deductions, retirement contributions, payroll taxes, and related payroll journal entries.

  • Review and approve journal entries, restricted and conditional revenue, net asset releases, and related supporting schedules.

  • Make technical accounting decisions and provide final review of higher-risk areas.

  • Oversee accounting functions, including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, grant tracking, and restricted-funding analysis.

  • Lead the annual audit; liaise with external auditors and the Board Finance Committee; oversee Form 990 preparation and other compliance requirements, including contracts, 1099s, and investment activity.

  • Establish, monitor, and strengthen internal controls, finance policies, and approval workflows to safeguard organizational assets.

  • Ensure compliance with tax laws and regulatory requirements.

  • Implement and maintain effective contract and financial management/reporting systems; ensure billing and collection schedules are met and that cash flow supports operational requirements.

  • Oversee banking, insurance, payment systems, contracts, state registrations, legal coordination, recurring compliance obligations, and key external finance partners.

  • Continuously strengthen finance policies, procedures, controls, and documentation to support compliance and sustainable growth without creating unnecessary complexity.

Grants & Contributed and Earned Revenue

  • Lead the financial tracking and management of all grants, including monitoring expenditures, analyzing financial data, and ensuring spending aligns with funder agreements and reporting requirements to ensure high quality stewardship.

  • Partner with the Chief Development Officer on multi-year revenue modeling and planning and scenario modeling.

  • Partner with Development to integrate fundraising pipeline projections, grant payment schedules, and cash flow forecasting into organizational planning.

  • In collaboration with the Controller, prepare project budgets for grant proposals and funding requests, and produce grant financial reports for major donors, corporations, and foundations.

  • Partner with Development and program leaders on grant budgets, restricted-funding compliance, donor reporting, and revenue forecasting.

  • Provide financial analysis to support institutional, corporate, and individual fundraising strategies.

  • Own and oversee Camelback’s fiscal sponsorship program, including program policies, due diligence, agreements, capacity and risk assessment, approval of disbursements, and financial and programmatic compliance throughout the sponsorship lifecycle.

Team Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise and support the Controller in day-to-day finance operations, with an eye toward building the right long-term team structure.

  • Set clear goals, priorities, expectations, and accountability, and provide regular supervision, coaching, feedback, and performance support.

  • Help direct reports manage workload, deadlines, cross-functional responsibilities, and competing priorities, and support their professional development and role clarity.

  • Build a Finance team culture that is collaborative, organized, responsive, and grounded in service to the mission.

  • Ensure external vendors and consultants are well-managed, cost-effective, and aligned with organizational needs.
