Universal Quantum

Quantum Computing

A quantum computer harnesses the fundamental forces that govern the physical world. It can efficiently model complex systems in ways that would take the best classical computer millions of years, and so help revolutionise drug design, climate modelling, battery chemistry, and many other vital processes. But to achieve all this, we need to make quantum computers work reliably at scale. We started Universal Quantum to meet this challenge - because we believe that by doing so, we can help solve the most difficult problems faced by humanity. We’re following a pragmatic, engineering-based roadmap to build a device that is useful in the real world: a quantum computer that has utility. Every approach we take, every solution we devise, is geared towards this goal.

Job description

At Universal Quantum, we aim to make the world a better place by engineering the future of computing. Together, we are creating truly impactful quantum computers. Our machines will be capable of solving problems until now considered impossible, with applications ranging across a broad range of industries, including healthcare, materials and aerospace. We are seeking to hire a Senior Experimental Quantum Physicist to lead complex ion trap quantum computing projects from concept through to successful execution.

What You’ll Accomplish

  • Lead and guide the operation, optimisation, calibration, and characterisation of ion-trap quantum computing hardware, with responsibility for experimental performance.
  • Lead the development and improvement of experimental methods for quantum measurement, quantum control, and system performance.
  • Apply strong AMO physics knowledge to solve complex problems in laser cooling, trapping, state preparation, quantum control, and detection.
  • Develop and use theoretical models and simulations to understand system behaviour, guide experiments, and inform optimisation and technical decisions.
  • Work across multidisciplinary teams of physicists and engineers to define experimental requirements, solve system-level problems, and guide technical decisions.
  • Mentor and support less experienced scientists and engineers in experimental methods, data analysis, and technical decision-making.
  • Contribute to the development of new concepts, methods, and technologies for future quantum computing products.

Requirements

The most critical attributes we’ll use to compare candidates

  1. Strong experimental AMO physics experience and ability to design, build, and improve complex experiments
Especially in laser cooling and trapping, and/or quantum control experiments using ion-trap or neutral-atom platforms, demonstrated through a strong publication record and/or hands-on experience developing advanced experimental systems.
  2. Strong modelling, simulation, and technical judgement
Experience using simulations and theoretical models to guide experiments, interpret results, and improve system performance.
  3. Ability to lead and deliver complex technical projects
Demonstrated experience taking ownership of projects, coordinating cross-functional teams, and driving work from concept through to successful execution.

Must-have

  • PhD in AMO physics or a closely related field; postdoctoral experience is highly desirable.
  • 7+ years of experience (PhD degree-inclusive) in calibrating, characterising, and operating experiments for quantum technologies.
  • Experience leading a relevant project in quantum measurement, quantum control, or experimental quantum systems.
  • Strong hands-on and problem-solving skills across laser systems, optics, microwave and RF control, and high-precision imaging systems.
  • Ability to take technical ownership of complex experimental problems and drive them toward clear outcomes.
  • Collaborative mindset, with the ability to coordinate effectively across physics and engineering teams.
  • Good communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly to both specialists and non-specialists.

Nice-to-have

  • Knowledge of surface ion-trap systems.
  • Experience with Ytterbium or Barium ion-qubit systems.
  • Strong Python programming skills, ideally applied to experimental control, data analysis, simulation, or automation.
  • Experience mentoring junior scientists, PhD students, or engineers.
  • Experience developing experimental procedures, technical documentation, or system-level test plans.

Please feel encouraged to apply even if you don't match all the requirements of our job description. We would love to receive your application even if you think you're only a partial match.
