Job Description Summary:

The Medical Value Director is a field-based Medical Affairs role responsible for scientific exchange and insight generation with external stakeholders, with a primary emphasis on engaging payer and reimbursement audiences (national and regional health plans, PBMs, and Medicaid). The role delivers fair-balanced scientific and clinical presentations, supports payer evidence needs through coordinated insights, and enables reimbursement readiness through development and maintenance of payer-facing scientific materials. The incumbent is also a resource to company management regarding market dynamics, business development, and client feedback.

In this payer-focused capacity, the incumbent delivers fair-balanced and objective scientific presentations, develops and maintains payer scientific materials (e.g., payer decks and Letters of Medical Necessity), gathers payer insights, and partners closely with US and Global Market Access, HEOR/RWE, and internal Medical stakeholders to translate payer evidence needs into actionable strategy.

The incumbent works cross-functionally with internal departments and external resources on Medical Affairs related issues.

The Medical Director supports adherence to relevant regulatory requirements and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as appropriate.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

  • Establishes, manages, and maintains successful relationships with payer stakeholders, including national/regional health plans, PBMs, and Medicaid organizations, as appropriate for Medical Affairs engagement.
  • Delivers, and may develop/design, fair-balanced and objective clinical and scientific presentations to payers in response to unsolicited requests for information on PTC marketed and developing products.
  • Supports reimbursement readiness by partnering with Market Access and HEOR/RWE to identify payer-relevant evidence gaps and inform real-world evidence (RWE) needs and communication of RWE learnings.
  • Tailors scientific communication for payer decision-makers by translating clinical evidence (trial and emerging data) into payer-relevant context (e.g., unmet need, patient selection, endpoints/outcomes of interest, durability, safety profile, and appropriate utilization considerations) in partnership with internal stakeholders.
  • US payer insights generation & internal communication.
  • Captures payer insights (e.g., evidence expectations, medical policy trends, prior authorization/UM themes, access barriers) and communicates synthesized findings in an efficient format to appropriate internal stakeholders.
  • Payer materials development, maintenance & governance.
  • Leads/coordinates the development and ongoing maintenance of US payer scientific decks and supporting materials, ensuring they remain current with new evidence, payer feedback, and approved messaging (through appropriate review processes).
  • Maintains and updates Letters of Medical Necessity and supporting templates/resources to reflect evolving payer requirements and clinical practice considerations, in partnership with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Reimbursement readiness & RWE / HEOR partnership.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally to ensure payer-facing narratives appropriately incorporate relevant clinical, RWE, and outcomes evidence (as available and compliant).
  • Develops and delivers training and ongoing updates for appropriate internal teams on payer decks/materials and payer landscape insights (as aligned with Medical Affairs scope and SOPs).
  • Establishes a process for timely dissemination of payer material updates and key payer learnings to relevant internal stakeholders.
  • Acts as a mentor to junior team members.

Qualifications:

Advanced scientific degrees (PhD, PharmD, MD, DNP, MSN, MS, Registered Dietician, or Genetic Counselor) with 5+ years of experience as Medical Science liaison.

  • Experience supporting an orphan product and/or previous clinical experience in Inborn Errors of Metabolism, genetics, and/or rare diseases. Experience in Phenylketonuria is preferred.
  • Experience supporting high-cost products that are distributed through a specialty pharmacy and requires extensive coordination with patient access services.
  • In-depth, hands-on experience working with KOLs, clinicians, HCPs, and payers, while striving to build strategic, long-term partnerships and develop tailored engagement plans that align with business and medical objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-impact, fair-balanced presentations to payer audiences and translate complex clinical data into payer-relevant scientific communication.
  • Strong experience gathering and synthesizing payer insights (plans/PBMs/Medicaid) and communicating implications to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Working understanding of RWE and HEOR concepts and the ability to partner with internal teams to translate evidence into field insights and materials.
  • Ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including scientific/technical writing and presentations, with the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly.
  • Demonstrated success in interpreting scientific data and presenting research information to scientists and HCPs.
  • Skilled in delivering high-impact presentations to both internal and external stakeholders with confidence.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for presenting data at local, regional, and national conferences, and effectively present at these events when opportunities arise.
  • Proven experience in developing and conducting engaging and informative training sessions to provide teams with the latest medical insights and industry best practices.
  • Strong analytical skills to critically evaluate new data and translate findings into effective field strategies, while identifying data gaps and proactively proposing solutions.
  • Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent understanding of the pharmaceutical delivery process and the ability to work compliantly/appropriately within the industry.
  • Excellent planning, organization, and time management skills, including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects, with experience in working on and leading projects and/or initiatives aligned to US Medical strategy, objectives, and tactics.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, as required, in a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of internal and external team members.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a personal automobile with an active vehicle insurance policy. Must be able to travel daily to/from customer accounts and drive and/or fly long distances (distances will vary based upon the size of assigned territory).
  • This position requires overnight travel, the amount of which will vary based upon the assigned territory. In addition to travel within the territory, overnight and/or weekend travel outside of the assigned territory is required.
  • Daily entry to hospitals and other medical facilities is required. Many facilities have instituted vendor credentialing policies that require vendors to meet defined training, background checks and proof of immunization requirements as a condition of entry. PTC employees entering these facilities are required to abide by these credentialing requirements.

Special knowledge or skills and/or licenses or certificates preferred.

  • Experience supporting an orphan, rare disease and/or specialized drug(s).

Travel requirements: 50 – 60%

Field-based position

We are seeking East and Central time zone candidates

Expected Base Salary Range:

$201,000 - $240,000 . The base salary offered will be contingent on assessment of candidate education level, background, and experience relative to the requirements of the position they are being considered for, as well as review of internal equity.

In addition to base salary, PTC employees are also eligible for short- and long-term incentives. All eligible employees may also enroll in PTC’s medical, dental, vision, and retirement savings plans.
