About the company

Webgility logo

Webgility

Every ecommerce founder making a decision today is basing it on a number that is roughly right. Roughly right inventory. Roughly right margin. Roughly right cashflow. And because the number looks close enough, the decision gets made. The reorder goes through. The campaign gets approved. The hire happens. Almost right is not good enough. Webgility exists because the gap between roughly right and actually right has a dollar figure and most operators have never calculated it. A 2-point margin misclassification at $10M GMV is $200,000 of decisions made on fiction every year. An Amazon settlement posted as a single income line means 34 fee types invisible in your books. A month-end that closes on the 22nd means every board call, every investor update, and every strategic decision made before that date is made from numbers that aren't final. We are the only ecommerce accounting solution that guarantees book closure. Not faster reconciliation. Not better sync. Guaranteed books - right, real, and now. Always on. Always reconciled. Because the founders who know their numbers don't wait to decide. The decision is already made by the time the call starts. That is what we build. That is the standard we hold.

Job description

This is a remote position.

Senior Staff Engineer (AI & Agentic Engineering)

Location: India (Flexible — WFO preferred, otherwise 2 quarterly visits are compulsory) |

The Role

As Senior Staff Engineer, you'll be one of the senior-most individual contributors driving that shift from the engineering side — turning "we should use AI here" into working, production systems. This is not a role where the product hands you a spec. You'll often be the one deciding what's worth building before anyone else has framed the problem.

Your core mandate is threefold:

  1. Build agentic capability into the core platform. Design and ship AI/agent-driven features — autonomous workflows, decision engines, LLM-integrated tooling — into a commerce platform already processing billions in transaction volume.

  2. Operate at the edge of ambiguity. Take a rough direction, not a groomed backlog, and turn it into a scoped, shippable plan yourself. You'll be trusted to define the "what" as much as the "how."

  3. Set the technical bar for how we build with AI. You won't be the only engineer touching this space — you'll help shape the standard others follow.

What You'll Walk Into

  • An agentic initiative already underway — early proof-of-concept work has shipped, momentum exists, but there's no dedicated senior technical owner driving it end-to-end yet

  • A production platform with deep integrations across QuickBooks, Shopify, Amazon, eBay, and more — technically complex and high-stakes

  • Owning distinct areas of the platform — you'll have real IC peers at your level, not just reports

  • A manager who will be a technical thought partner, not a filter — you'll engage directly with architecture and roadmap decisions, not through a PM layer

Requirements

What You'll Do

Agentic Product Development

  • Design and build AI/agent-driven features across the commerce platform — from proof-of-concept to production

  • Own ambiguous, 0-to-1 problems end-to-end without waiting on a fully-groomed spec

Technical Ownership & Craft

  • Make and defend architecture calls independently; bring options with tradeoffs, not open-ended questions

  • Partner with our architecture function on how agentic systems integrate cleanly into the existing platform layer, rather than bypassing it

Roadmap & Direction

  • Partner with engineering and product leadership on what to build, not just receive requirements — shape the roadmap, don't just consume it

  • Identify where AI creates real leverage for customers (vs. where it's just a buzzword) and make the case for it

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Set technical direction for others working in the agentic space; raise the bar on how the team builds with AI

  • Communicate decisions and tradeoffs clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders

What We're Looking For

Must-haves:

  • 8+ years in backend/systems engineering, with real production experience owning complex systems end-to-end

  • Hands-on fluency with AI/LLM tooling — you've built with agents, RAG, tool-calling, or similar, not just used ChatGPT

  • Demonstrated comfort operating without a fully-defined spec — a track record of shaping a fuzzy problem into a concrete, shippable plan

  • Strong, independent architectural judgment — comfortable defending a design decision under scrutiny

  • Self-directed — you don't need a product manager to break down the work before you can start

  • Clear communicator — can explain a technical decision and its tradeoffs to both engineers and leadership

Strong advantages:

  • Experience with .NET / C# (our core stack)

  • Prior experience in a startup or small-team environment where you owned ambiguity by necessity, not choice

  • Exposure to e-commerce, ERP, or integration-heavy platforms

Benefits

Why Join Webgility

  • Real impact: Your work directly shapes how thousands of small businesses operate, not just how data moves between systems

  • Builder's role: You're defining Webgility's agentic capability, not maintaining an established roadmap someone else set

  • Domain depth: Ecommerce + accounting is a complex, high-stakes integration problem with a large TAM

  • Direct access: You'll work closely with engineering leadership on architecture and direction, with real influence over what gets built next
