Senior Process Engineer

Status: Exempt (salaried) – According Plug NL policies Department: Engineering – Process

Focus – Process Control & Process Safety

Position Summary

The Senior Process Engineer is a key member of the Electrolyzer engineering team working together with other disciplines to develop a fit-for-purpose system, applying creative, costeffective solutions, but without ever compromising safety. In this function the individual is responsible for the specification, design, integration and continual support of all process equipment, process control and safeguarding of PEM electrolysis-based hydrogen generation systems. By combining strong analytical thinking, a structured way of working, and an ability to explain and document design choices, this role ensures system design is as per industry best practices and compliant with applicable codes & standards. The successful candidate is enthusiastic about process control and process safety, self-motivated, able to handle multiple assignments and willing to learn and adapt in a fast-paced product engineering organization.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures designs comply with applicable process and process safety codes & standards/legislation.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge and skills to address current and future project and market demands.
  • Develops process design basis, control and safeguarding philosophies, PFD, P&ID, Cause & Effect diagrams, control and safeguarding narratives.
  • Actively participates in reviews for design (P&ID, 3D model) and safety (HAZOP, LOPA).
  • Takes ownership of design and additional department requirements.
  • Identifies areas of concern with necessary corrective action early on to department head. 
  • Informs the Engineering Manager regarding possible (technical) problems, risks and additional work. Escalates issues to the appropriate management level when appropriate.
  • Closely collaborates with process engineers in other Plug Offices globally.
  • Mentors team members on design work and acts as technical resource for guidance in their area of expertise.
  • Responsible for the technical design, including cost efficiency and conformity to customer specifications, as per agreed schedule. 
  • Responsible for clear and correct engineering documentation.
  • Responsible for handling technical communication with external engineering parties and, where applicable, with clients. 
  • Responsible for the technical review of supplier quotations. 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in relevant Engineering discipline and/or relevant work experience
  • 5-10 years of experience in process engineering
  • Specialized in process control or process safety
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with (International) Codes & Standards, including CE, IEC, API
  • Demonstrated knowledge of control and safeguarding logic
  • Familiar with applicable functional safety standards.
