Job description

Who we are

Semafor is a global news platform for an increasingly complex world in which consumers are overwhelmed by too many news sources and unsure what to trust. We are building Semafor to enable world-class journalists to deliver reporting and insights with rigor in journalistic forms that ensure a new level of transparency. Our editors and reporters distill the most important stories from all over in formats that uncover the forces shaping the stories, explain the interests behind polarizing narratives, and replenish the stock of shared facts. As a global platform, Semafor recognizes that smart people can disagree and that informed readers need to understand alternative points of view from competing centers of power and culture in a multi-polar world. About the Role

Semafor is expanding across Asia to help decision-makers in the region and around the world make sense of the region’s rapidly shifting dynamics in trade, technology, finance, geopolitics and global power, in the primary theater where the new global economy is being built.

We want to connect the dots across this complex landscape, delivering rigorous, independent business journalism to the world’s most discerning readers and are looking for a talented journalist with deep knowledge of China and the Asia-Pacific region to help lead an expansion effort across digital platforms and live journalism.

A seasoned leader with a track record of managing teams, the successful candidate will bring a deep understanding of the economic and financial forces transforming Asia — with a focus on how China is reshaping the region and the world.

We’re looking for someone with an entrepreneurial attitude, a deep sense of their audience, sure feet and a clear voice to produce useful, revelatory, and fair coverage in an enormous and complex part of the world. This person will be charged with chronicling the forces shaping Asia including trade, technology, capital flows, energy, CEOs, power, politics, and policy.

The successful candidate will be well-sourced and eager to get scoops and deliver big interviews, while bringing a sophisticated perspective in delivering thought-provoking and insightful stories. Reporting to the Global Managing Editor, the Asia Editor will be charged with building out our Asia-based reporting team and products, targeting sophisticated, engaged, and globally aware readers who live in — or have deep interest and connections to — the region.

The ideal candidate will be based in Singapore, but Semafor is open to applicants in other parts of the region.

Your responsibilities

  • Work with Semafor’s leaders to shape our Asia vision and product.
  • Help recruit for and build Semafor’s Asia-based reporting team.
  • Lead the development of Semafor’s Asia briefings and products that best cater to our readers, viewers, and listeners.
  • Anchor Semafor’s coverage across Asia — across all platforms and live journalism.
  • Write must-read stories about the region, with a focus on business, economics, technology, and energy for a sophisticated audience who live in, or have interest and connections to Asia.
  • Participate in event moderation, as well as media appearances on TV, radio, and podcasts.
  • Collaborate closely with other parts of Semafor’s global newsroom and audience teams.

What makes you qualified

  • 10+ years of journalism experience, including relevant experience covering Asia
  • A track record of newsroom leadership.
  • Experience and interest in global financial and business journalism.
  • A strategic, sophisticated approach to identifying themes and focuses of coverage across sectors and borders.
  • Bring speedy insight to big news stories, and flair and personality to writing.
  • A passion for world events and issues and a broad interest in a wide range of subjects.
  • Broad media consumption habits across conventional and unconventional sources.
  • Eagerness to be part of a dynamic work environment demanding initiative, flexibility, and a willingness to jump in wherever needed to help the team succeed.
  • Experience working with diverse teams with teammates from many different backgrounds.
  • Diligence and reliability to work without hands-on supervision.
  • The ability to think constantly about story distribution and audiences, across many forms of media and platforms.
