Senior Database Migration Engineer (PostgreSQL/MS SQL Server) - Full Remote Portugal

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Our client is a global software engineering company built on the belief that great software comes from great people. They're looking for a Senior Database Migration Engineer to join an agile, collaborative team where technical depth and personal voice carry equal weight. This is not a "just manage the databases" role — you'll act as a technical partner helping the organization migrate and modernize its data architecture. PROJECT & CONTEXT

You'll partner with development teams to guide the migration of a monolithic MS SQL Server database to a highly scalable, distributed read/write PostgreSQL architecture. This includes translating complex legacy database logic into optimized modern queries (moving from T-SQL to PL/pgSQL), and working on indexing, partitioning strategies, and high-performing configuration setups across a multi-node database environment. You'll also actively explore and integrate AI-assisted engineering tools — specifically Claude Code — into daily database workflows to accelerate refactoring and optimization.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR (Required)

• Fluent English (written and spoken)
• High mid-to-senior level expertise in PostgreSQL and/or MS SQL Server
• Solid understanding of engineering and architectural principles, applying a software engineer's mindset to data modeling and infrastructure challenges
• Proven track record of end-to-end database delivery in fast-paced environments, with deep expertise in SQL and database internals
• Strong communication skills, able to translate complex technical database concepts to leadership and partners
• Conceptual or hands-on familiarity with distributed database environments, partitioning, replication, and performance tuning

NICE TO HAVE (Preferred)

• Hands-on experience with both PostgreSQL and MS SQL Server
• Experience using AI programming assistants such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor to augment daily development
