TITLE:                           Marine Consultant

DEPARTMENT:            EIMC

REPORTS TO:               Team Leader

STATUS:                      Regular, Full-Time, Exempt

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE
The Marine Consultant serves in a project manager capacity to help effectively determine and communicate the extent of loss or damage associated with marine claims in a variety of business classes. The Marine Consultant assists the client in fulfilling its obligations under marine policies to policyholders and helps safeguard the insurer’s reputation and efficacy.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Independently handles assigned cases within basic limits of complexity.
  • Identifies, recommends, and pursues appropriate loss mitigation strategies by utilizing effective salvage, disposal, and recovery methods with supervisory oversight as necessary.
  • Actively expands current knowledge base to include broader analysis of terms, clauses, and coverage to drive continuous improvement.
  • Effectively addresses and provides solutions to external questions/disputes with a focus on providing exceptional customer service.
  • Routinely produces clear, concise, and grammatically correct reports, which require minimal review/edits, in accordance with company and client requirements.
  • Participates in peer reviews providing constructive recommendations and being open to feedback.
  • Produces accurate invoices with a keen focus on time and expense, estimates, and client intent.
  • Granted supervised authority to communicate with clients beyond routine case correspondence; demonstrates timely reliability to clients.
  • Pursues and completes applicable credentialing, such as Lloyds Agency Module 3: Cargo Claims & Recoveries credentialing; maintains a commitment to professional and personal development.
  • Identifies potentially valuable case studies from experience and works with leadership to share those cases through supervised contributions to presentations.
  • May assist with business development activities as directed.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with other members of the organization across departments, divisions, and locations.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of proprietary and sensitive information, exercising sound judgment and discretion in any disclosure of information related to EM, EIMC, and its endeavors.
  • Adheres to all applicable State Insurance Regulation requirements and other applicable laws, regulations, and standards.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior experience in ocean marine claim adjusting or other insurance-related work preferred
  • Prior experience working with a cloud enterprise software solution preferred

  • Understanding of the claims adjudication process

  • Skilled in analyzing, interpreting, and reporting pertinent information (discerning the essential from the non-essential)
  • Project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a commitment to providing excellent customer service
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to quickly learn and become proficient in multiple internal platforms
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is conducted primarily in a remote location or in an indoor office environment with protection from weather conditions and with exposure to noise typical of an office or administrative setting.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 lbs.; constantly remaining in a stationary position often standing or sitting for prolonged periods; reaching, handling, grasping, fingering (keyboarding) and repetitive hand motion. Work requires handling office equipment; visual acuity to assess the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned; speaking and hearing the spoken word in normal face-to-face, telephonic, and/or electronic business communications; ability to view and use a computer terminal.
