Summary of Role:

This position is responsible for supporting MRDA’s Regulatory Affairs & Certification (RAC) department on all safety regulatory, certification and compliance matters affecting current and future light-duty vehicle content/design/development/performance related to vehicle safety and advanced technologies.
 
This position offers flexibility to work from home while maintaining strong collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. The RAC Engineer will be expected to participate in periodic in-person meetings with RAC team members and with select external organizations. While most day-to-day interactions will be conducted virtually, this position requires a proactive communicator who can effectively engage in a hybrid environment, balance independent remote work and occasional on-site presence with internal and external stakeholders to support team alignment and relationship-building.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Plan and coordinate information submission concerning safety compliance and consumer ratings (NCAP, IIHS, Consumer Reports) of North American (NA) market vehicles. 
  • Support the development of (and updates to) vehicle safety regulatory forecasts. 
  • Research, investigate, and benchmark competitors’ components, systems, and structures along with passive and active safety performance advancement and optimization strategies. 
  • Research, track and report on federal and state legislation and regulations related to vehicle safety. 
  • Monitor and report on emerging trends and regulations on advanced in-vehicle technologies. 
  • Interact with entities including but not limited to NHTSA, IIHS, NTSB, Consumer Reports (CR), the Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AAI), other vehicle manufacturers, Mitsubishi North American Affiliate offices (MMNA and MMSCan), and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC). 
  • Ensure that items of importance to Mitsubishi Motors are reported on in a timely manner. 
  • Prepare and seek Manager approval for release of work products on light-duty vehicle safety matters. Advise MMC on recommended actions. 
  • Support work on analysis and strategic recommendations in a timely manner to MMC on US regulatory activities; guide MMC in its comments for rulemaking or other government-initiated actions; help to consolidate MMC/MMNA input.
  • Represent MRDA/MMC at US industry vehicle safety committees and workgroups, inform MMC in a timely manner on related discussions, and advise MMC on recommended actions.
  • Support MMSCan on vehicle safety related matters upon request.
  • Respond to interpretation requests related to vehicle safety regulations and associated compliance test procedures. 
  • Support providing input on new regulatory and consumer program requirements, engage with and advocate MMC’s position to safety organizations regarding such requirements.
  • Plan, coordinate, witness, analyze, and document safety testing of Mitsubishi vehicles sold in the NA market.

Required Qualifications:

  • Four-year engineering degree (automotive related) or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of automotive development or equivalent experience. Active or passive safety preferred.
  • Competent in one or more automotive regulatory, compliance & certification domains · General understanding of two or more additional automotive regulatory, compliance & certification domains.
  • Computer literacy, particularly word-processing and spreadsheet ability; other Microsoft Office products; and Internet research.
  • Proven research abilities are required. Ability to apply related engineering principles and practices to safety and advanced technology-related technical projects and processes.
