Job description

At MCG, we lead the healthcare community to deliver patient-focused care. We have a mission-driven team of talented physicians and technical experts developing our evidence-based content and innovating our products to accelerate improvements in healthcare. If you are driven to enhance the US healthcare system, MCG is eager to have you join our team. We cultivate a work environment that nurtures personal and professional growth, and this is a thrilling time to become a part of our organization. With dynamic roles that offer meaningful impact, you'll be able to fully realize your potential. Plus, you'll enjoy world-class benefits and the security, stability, and resources of our parent company, Hearst, with over 100 years of experience.

MCG is rapidly expanding a new API platform, Synapse Everywhere, that delivers clinical intelligence to healthcare partners at scale. We are hiring a Staff Software Development Engineer to work with the team on the external API surface: design, scalability, security posture, and developer experience.

This role treats an API as a product. You will be part of the team that determines what Synapse Everywhere exposes, how it behaves under load and failure, and what the experience of building on it feels like for an external developer. You will work directly with the Director of Software Engineering to determine what is feasible to build, in what order, and with what guarantees. This is a new platform so high ambiguity is the baseline, not the exception.

AI-assisted & human-owned development is the standard on this team. We expect engineers at this level to be excellent at discerning when and how to use AI tools. Team cohesion is critical for the pace of development, so you’ll be joining a high respect high and high personal accountability team.

You Will:

  • Establish yourself as the engineer others look to when the problems are the hardest and make sure they come away knowing how to approach the next one themselves.
  • Lead API surface decisions: what gets exposed, what stays internal, what the stability guarantees are for external consumers.
  • Own technical discovery for new capabilities; work with product and clinical stakeholders to translate requirements into feasible contracts.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for the Synapse Everywhere platform; respond to incidents, own post-incident reviews, and drive reliability improvements from what is learned.
  • Provide expert code reviews and technical mentorship within the team.
  • Design solutions on modern infrastructure (cloud solutions, k8s, LLMs) with expert level understanding of what and why, not just being able to call infrastructure or run pipelines.

What We're Looking For:

  • At least 7+ years of professional software development experience, with a meaningful portion spent designing or operating public or partner-facing APIs.
  • Deep knowledge with back-end technologies such as Golang, Python, and Kotlin.
  • Experience with API gateway or management tooling in a production environment (e.g., Azure API Management, Kong, AWS API Gateway, or equivalent).
  • Experienced in building meaningful tests at all layers (unit through live verification).
  • Capable of setting up effective monitoring solutions for both APIs and model performance.
  • Excellent analytical, research, and communication skills
  • Experience in Health Care Industry and/or with Machine Learning Data Science or NLP is a plus
