Fuels & Low Carbon Technology (F&LCT) is a global organization of more than 300 technologists, scientists, and engineers who develop groundbreaking solutions across bp’s Fuels, Refining, Bioenergy, and Hydrogen businesses. The organization also supports bp’s wider Technology function through innovation management, modelling, digital science, and academic research partnerships—providing the scientific and engineering foundation that enables bp’s low carbon and operational ambitions.
Within F&LCT, the Bioenergy & Hydrogen Technology (B&HT) team focuses on crafting and scaling technologies that unlock bp’s low carbon growth. The team advances pathways across bioenergy, biogas, SAF, hydrogen, and novel feedstocks, while working closely with bp businesses to ensure solutions meet real operational and commercial needs. B&HT plays a central role in defining bp’s technology direction for today’s energy needs as well as the energy transition by driving innovation from early-stage concepts through deployment ready solutions.
We are delighted to present this excellent opportunity for an Associate Technologist to join our distributed team of scientists who provide data and insight reaching across bp – from research and innovation into low carbon technologies, to critical business support for our global value chain.
The Research Operations team is expected to work across multiple interfaces to ensure business needs are being met and developed. The team operates complex equipment, including high‑throughput reactors, electrolysers, and bench‑scale systems. These capabilities support bp’s strategic framework across fuels (including biofuels), SAF, biogas, feedstocks, hydrogen, oil and gas, and cross‑cutting low‑carbon initiatives.
Contribute to the development of a strong HSSE culture aligned with bp’s goals and standards.
Coordinate maintenance and modification activities within areas of responsibility, including acting as equipment custodian and fulfilling other operational roles as required.
Plan and deliver laboratory experimental programmes, including experimental unit and feedstock preparation, online analysis, and testing.
Collaborate with team members and specialist analytical services to implement agreed work programmes.
Acquire, interpret, and report experimental data, presenting results and conclusions clearly in both written and oral formats to key partners.
Communicate technical and operational information accurately, clearly, and optimally to peers and key partners.
Contribute to team success by fostering learning, sharing ideas, building capability, and driving continuous improvement in processes and experimental capability.
Develop and enhance existing laboratory methods to improve performance and support the implementation of new laboratory techniques as appropriate.
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related science field, or demonstrate proven track record to exercise discretion and independent judgement across all aspects of experimental work, including experiment design, data analysis, and the drawing of sound conclusions.
Practical experience of laboratory scale research or process development operations, catalyst synthesis and analytical techniques.
Personal responsibility for the safety of themselves and the safety of others, fostering a positive psychological safety work environment to embed the speak-up culture.
Chip in to the delivery of perfection in experimental execution, by applying standard process to achieve the best results.
Experience and knowledge of catalyst preparation, analysis, and testing.
Experience of operating a range of high temperature/high pressure equipment.
Experience of hands-on mechanical competence, proficiency in chemical processes, and high attention to safety (HSSE).
Previous experience in laboratory, or industrial environments.
