Job description

Role Summary

Marco Polo Learning is building a self-purchase, subscription website and end-to-end buying experience for individual customers (a "bottom-up" growth motion, distinct from our top-down sales team). We're looking for someone who sits between product design and marketing: someone who can design the look, flow, and feel of the purchase experience, and who deeply understands how subscription businesses are built and activated — pricing and packaging, onboarding and activation sequences, trial-to-paid conversion, and retention. Implementation support (website build, integrations) is available via AI tools and an engineering partner — this role is not being hired primarily for coding ability. It is being hired for the combination of design judgment and subscription marketing/business judgment: what the funnel should look like, say, and do at each step, and why.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design the self-purchase subscription experience: landing pages, sign-up, trial, and checkout — the layout, flow, and presentation of pricing/packaging.
  • Design the activation and onboarding sequence: what a new user sees, is told, and is prompted to do after signing up, so they reach their first "aha" moment and convert to paid.
  • Own the copy and messaging strategy across the funnel (emails, in-app messaging, landing pages) — writing it or directing whoever does.
  • Partner with an engineering/automation resource and/or AI tools to get the designed funnel actually built and wired up — this role directs and reviews the build, it does not need to personally code it.
  • Bring a proven subscription business background — pricing, activation, churn, and growth-loop thinking — so we are not starting from zero on funnel strategy or design.
  • Define what to test (design variations, pricing, onboarding steps, messaging) and read the results to keep improving conversion and activation.
  • Track and report on subscription funnel metrics: sign-ups, activation rate, trial-to-paid conversion, and early retention.

What This Role Is Not

  • Not primarily an engineering or coding role — implementation support is available via AI tools and an engineering partner; this hire is for the design and marketing/business thinking behind the funnel.
  • Not a purely visual/UI design role — this role needs design paired with subscription business and marketing judgment, not visual design alone.
  • Not a pure automations/ops role — this hire owns funnel design and marketing strategy, and directs engineering/AI resources for execution rather than building or automating internal systems.

Requirements

  • Proven experience designing and/or growing a subscription or self-serve SaaS/consumer product — you can point to a funnel or subscription business you designed, built, or materially improved.
  • Product design skills — able to design clean, conversion-minded web and email experiences (wireframes/mockups at minimum), not just direct a designer.
  • Strong grasp of subscription business fundamentals: activation, trial-to-paid conversion, churn/retention, pricing and packaging.
  • Hands-on growth marketing experience: email/lifecycle marketing, landing page strategy, basic analytics and experimentation.
  • Comfortable directing a technical build (via AI tools or a partner engineer) even if not writing the code personally — enough fluency to know what's possible and review the output.
  • Hands-on experience working with AI coding tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code) to prototype or ship parts of the funnel directly, rather than relying solely on a separate engineer.
  • Strong written English for copywriting and stakeholder communication with a US-based team.
  • Self-directed: able to ask the right questions, propose a plan, and execute with minimal day-to-day oversight.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in EdTech or a subscription product sold to consumers/parents.
  • Familiarity with HubSpot, N8N, ClickUp, or similar tools already in use at Marco Polo.
  • Enough technical/no-code fluency (Webflow, AI website builders) to prototype ideas quickly, even if final build is handed off for implementation.
