Job description

Reading Interventionist

Reports To: Director of Academics and Governance
Department: Academic Services
Position Type: School-Year Cycle (SYC)

Position Summary and Responsibilities

Working remotely from a home office, the Reading Interventionist supports student literacy achievement through the delivery of targeted, evidence-based reading interventions and literacy support services. This position serves as a key member of the Academic Services team and supports schoolwide literacy improvement efforts through intervention delivery, progress monitoring, MTSS participation, and collaboration with students, families, teachers, and administrators.

The Reading Interventionist provides Tier 2 and Tier 3 literacy interventions designed to accelerate student growth, close achievement gaps, and improve reading proficiency across grade levels. This role supports implementation of structured literacy practices aligned to the Science of Reading, Pennsylvania academic standards, and schoolwide literacy goals.

Other key responsibilities include the following:

Student Intervention & Instruction

  • Deliver Tier 2 and Tier 3 literacy interventions through individual and small-group virtual instruction;
  • Provide evidence-based instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written language;
  • Develop and monitor individualized intervention plans based on student needs and performance data;
  • Differentiate instruction and adjust intervention strategies to maximize student growth;
  • Support synchronous and asynchronous intervention opportunities; and
  • Maintain intervention documentation and progress monitoring records.

MTSS & Data Analysis

  • Analyze multiple sources of student data including IXL, curriculum-based measures, classroom performance data, benchmark assessments, and PSSA results;
  • Participate in MTSS meetings, data review discussions, and student support planning;
  • Monitor intervention effectiveness and recommend instructional adjustments based on student outcomes;
  • Assist with identification of students requiring literacy intervention services;
  • Analyze schoolwide literacy data and provide recommendations regarding intervention priorities, literacy supports, and achievement improvement strategies;
  • Identify literacy trends, achievement gaps, and areas of instructional need to support schoolwide literacy improvement efforts; and
  • Support schoolwide literacy improvement initiatives through data analysis and progress monitoring.

 

Teacher Support & Professional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, counselors, intervention teams, and administrators to support student achievement;
  • Share instructional resources, intervention strategies, and literacy supports with instructional staff;
  • Model effective intervention practices and structured literacy strategies when appropriate;
  • Support implementation of Science of Reading and structured literacy initiatives across the school;
  • Participate in curriculum review, instructional improvement efforts, and literacy planning initiatives; and
  • Collaborate with instructional teams to strengthen literacy outcomes and intervention effectiveness.

Family Engagement & Communication

  • Communicate regularly with students and families regarding intervention goals, progress, and support strategies;
  • Provide resources and recommendations to support literacy development at home; and
  • Participate in family conferences, student support meetings, and engagement events as needed.

Assessment, School Support & Professional Responsibilities

  • Assist with benchmark assessments, literacy screening processes, and state testing support activities;
  • Support schoolwide literacy initiatives and achievement goals;
  • Participate in professional development, department meetings, and school improvement activities;
  • Travel as needed to support state testing, professional development, and school events;
  • Stay current on literacy research, intervention practices, Science of Reading initiatives, and Pennsylvania academic standards; and
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education & Certification

  • Valid Pennsylvania Instructional I or II Teaching Certificate required;
  • Reading Specialist Certification required; and
  • Pennsylvania residency preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum three years of successful teaching experience preferred;
  • Experience providing reading interventions and literacy support services preferred;
  • Experience supporting MTSS systems, progress monitoring, or intervention planning preferred; and
  • Experience working within a virtual or cyber learning environment preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of literacy development, structured literacy practices, and the Science of Reading;
  • Ability to analyze student achievement data and develop targeted intervention plans;
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills;
  • Ability to manage intervention caseloads, documentation systems, and progress monitoring responsibilities;
  • Technologically proficient with IXL, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office products, and student information systems;
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment; and
  • Ability to travel as needed.
