Job Summary:


The Senior Director of Safety is responsible for establishing and executing the enterprise safety vision for one of North America's leading renewable energy services organizations. This executive leader partners with Operations, Commercial, Human Resources, and Executive Leadership to position safety as a strategic business differentiator that protects people, strengthens customer relationships, supports operational excellence, and enables sustainable growth. 


The Senior Director provides strategic leadership across multiple business units and geographic regions, fostering a proactive safety culture while ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. This role balances executive strategy with visible field leadership, building credibility with employees, customers, and industry stakeholders while developing scalable systems that support a growing organization.


The ideal candidate should reside in the contiguous United States and located near a major airport to support business travel.


Essential Duties


Strategic Leadership

  • Establish and execute the enterprise safety strategy in alignment with the organization's strategic plan.
  • Serve as the executive sponsor for company-wide safety initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Partner with Executive Leadership to integrate safety into operational planning, business development, customer engagement, and organizational decision making.
  • Develop multi-year strategic roadmaps that improve organizational performance while supporting growth objectives.


Organizational Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing safety organization capable of supporting multiple business units and future growth.
  • Establish accountability, performance expectations, succession planning, and leadership development within the safety function.
  • Build cross-functional partnerships that strengthen collaboration between Safety, Operations, Commercial, Human Resources, Fleet, and other support functions.


Operational Excellence

  • Maintain a highly visible presence across field operations to understand business challenges, reinforce expectations, and ensure safety programs remain practical and effective.
  • Drive consistency in safety management systems, risk mitigation strategies, incident investigations, and corrective action processes.
  • Utilize data analytics and leading indicators to proactively identify trends and improve organizational performance.


Regulatory & Industry Leadership

  • Provide executive oversight of compliance with OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, and other federal, state, local, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Monitor emerging regulatory developments and industry trends, ensuring the organization proactively adapts to changing requirements.
  • Represent the organization with customers, regulatory agencies, and industry associations as a trusted safety leader.


Customer Partnership

  • Develop executive-level relationships with customers and owners to strengthen confidence in the organization's safety performance.
  • Support commercial growth through customer engagement, safety presentations, audits, and strategic planning sessions.
  • Serve as an executive representative during customer meetings, incident reviews, and business development opportunities.

Requirements

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive environmental, health, and safety leadership experience, including executive or senior leadership responsibility.
  • Demonstrated success leading enterprise safety programs supporting geographically dispersed, multi-site field operations.
  • Experience supporting organizations operating within renewable energy, construction, industrial services, utilities, infrastructure, or similarly complex operational environments.
  • Proven success influencing executive leadership while driving organizational change and continuous improvement.
  • Experience leading organizations through periods of growth, operational transformation, or cultural change.
  • Demonstrated success developing scalable safety management systems that improve both leading and lagging performance indicators.
  • Ability to travel as required.


Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

The physical demands of this position are generally moderate and include a combination of office-based work, executive meetings, customer engagement, and regular field presence at operational sites. 


Specific requirements include:

  • Ability to travel up to 50% to company offices, customer locations, project sites, field operations, and other business locations. Travel may include air travel, overnight stays, and extended trips depending on operational needs.
  • Ability to respond with urgency to significant safety events, serious incidents, customer escalations, regulatory matters, or other time-sensitive business needs.
  • Extended periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer, reviewing reports, participating in meetings, and communicating through digital platforms.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, and navigate active construction, industrial, warehouse, yard, and field environments during site visits.
  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces, access work areas, and observe field operations in varying environmental conditions.
  • Frequent use of hands for typing, writing, handling office equipment, reviewing documentation, and using mobile or digital devices.
  • Active listening, clear speech, and effective communication are essential for engaging executives, customers, leaders, employees, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or move up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment as required by company, customer, or site-specific requirements.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions during field visits, including heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, and other outdoor conditions.
  • Potential exposure to active construction areas, heavy equipment, cranes, rigging activities, fleet operations, warehouse or yard environments, and other operational hazards while following all applicable safety requirements.
