Description

Job Summary

The Technical Lead will provide cross-team technical direction across our software portfolio. This is an individual-contributor leadership role: no direct reports, but significant influence over architecture, code quality, and technical decision-making across one or more product teams. The role leads through technical expertise and cross-team coordination rather than reporting-line authority, ensuring our solutions stay architecturally consistent as they evolve independently.

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports to: Director Engineering
  • Non-supervisory position

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Set and maintain technical direction across one or more of our software solutions, ensuring consistency in architecture, patterns, and tooling between teams that might otherwise drift apart
  • Split time roughly evenly between hands-on coding (prototyping, tackling complex technical problems, contributing to core systems) and leadership activities (architecture reviews, technical mentoring, cross-team coordination)
  • Review and guide major architectural decisions, including legacy modernization efforts and evaluating migration paths for existing platform components
  • Act as a technical escalation point for complex problems that cross team boundaries
  • Establish and evolve engineering standards, including database design conventions, API patterns, service boundaries, and mobile development practices
  • Mentor engineers across teams without formal management authority — influence through expertise and relationship-building rather than reporting lines
  • Partner with engineering leadership to translate business priorities into technical roadmaps
  • Identify technical debt and performance risks proactively, before they become production incidents
Requirements

Job Competencies, Skills & Experience

  • Required
  • Deep experience across a full stack spanning mobile and backend development
  • Strong relational database fundamentals (schema design, indexing, performance tuning) at scale, ideally across multiple client/tenant databases
  • Hands-on experience with Azure cloud infrastructure and hybrid on-prem/cloud architectures
  • Experience designing and operating microservice architectures, including service decomposition and inter-service communication patterns
  • A track record of driving technical decisions through influence rather than authority
  • Comfort moving between hands-on implementation and higher-level architectural thinking within the same week, sometimes the same day
  • Experience modernizing legacy systems incrementally, without “rip and replace” disruption
  • Excellent written and verbal communication — much of this role’s impact comes from clearly articulating why a technical direction matters, not just what it is
  • Preferred
  • Experience with event-sourced architectures
  • Familiarity with ORM-based data access patterns and the tradeoffs of working with mature, established codebases
  • Background mentoring engineers informally (code reviews, pairing, brown-bag sessions) rather than through formal management
