Field Service Engineer – Switzerland (Central Region)

Field-based role with ~75% travel across Switzerland (Zurich, Basel, Bern)

A valid driver’s licence is essential.

The Role

As a Field Service Engineer here at Illumina in Switzerland, you will join our Service and Support organisation, delivering hands-on technical expertise across a diverse customer base in central Switzerland. This role plays a critical part in ensuring our instruments operate at peak performance, providing installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting support directly on-site. You will act as a key interface between customers and internal teams, helping to maintain high service quality and customer satisfaction.

This is a development-focused opportunity within a collaborative regional team, ideal for someone looking to grow into a fully independent Field Service Engineer through structured training, mentorship, and hands-on experience.

Fluency in German and English is essential, enabling you to operate effectively across different regions and documentation requirements. French language skills would be a strong advantage given the regional coverage.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Customer Service & Field Support

  • Perform on-site installation, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of complex equipment

  • Deliver high-quality, timely customer support while ensuring strong customer satisfaction

  • Build trusted relationships with customers through professional and clear communication

Technical Troubleshooting & Escalation

  • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and system-level issues with minimal supervision

  • Escalate complex technical issues and collaborate with product support teams

  • Progress from preventative maintenance into more advanced troubleshooting and repairs

Training & Development

  • Participate in a structured training programme including LMS learning, formal training sessions (e.g. Milan, global sites), and on-the-job shadowing

  • Develop from preventative maintenance tasks to full system ownership over time

  • Train customers and support knowledge-sharing within the team

Operational Excellence & Compliance

  • Accurately document service activities, reports, and compliance records

  • Ensure adherence to safety standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements

  • Manage spare parts inventory and ensure accurate tracking

Travel & Field Operations

  • Travel extensively (~75%) across Switzerland with occasional overnight stays

  • Support customers across key regions including Zurich, Basel, and Bern

  • Manage field schedules and logistics independently

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Some experience in field service, technical support, or a similar role.

  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.

  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools, technical documentation, and system schematics.

  • Ability to work independently in dynamic and sometimes high-pressure environments.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

INDEUR

The estimated base salary range for the FSE 2 Switzerland role based in Switzerland is CHF 81,800 - 122,800.

The range reflects long‑term growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. This salary range applies to the primary posting location listed above. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range will be updated accordingly. Compensation ranges for other locations will differ to reflect local market competitiveness and will be shared with candidates if applicable during the recruitment process.

Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
