Job description

📈 Who We Are:

We are rebuilding the energy transaction, making it transparent and fair.

Our goal is to put power back where it belongs, in the hands of customers and to take on one of the most critical problems of our century, access to low cost electricity.

tem exists to fix a broken global energy market that’s long favoured legacy operators, intermediaries, and opaque pricing. Today’s electricity system was not designed for rapid decarbonisation, AI-driven efficiency or fair access for the actual users - businesses and generators.

We’ve built the first AI native transaction infrastructure to reinvent how electricity is bought, sold and priced. Our technology is designed to cut out the inefficient fees, automate complex market flows, and bring transparency and fairness to energy transactions at scale.

In late 2025, after extraordinary growth, we closed a $75 million Series B - led by Lightspeed Venture Partners with participation from Albion, Atomico, Allianz, Hitachi Ventures, Hitachi Ventures, Schroders Capital and others - positioning us for global expansion, deeper product innovation and category leadership.

We’re scaling internationally and building toward a future where AI-driven infrastructure is foundational to electricity markets worldwide.

Since launch, our modern utility product, known as RED, has already facilitated thousands of business customers and billions in energy transaction value, proving that modern software and AI can transform an industry built on legacy systems.

At tem, we’re not just building another energy company, we’re rearchitecting market infrastructure so that transparency, efficiency and sustainability become the default, not the exception.

🏅 The Role:

We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Developer Experience and DevOps teams and create the conditions for high performance across both. You'll shape how we operate, bringing clarity, alignment, and energy to two teams of Staff and Senior Engineers, and to how the rest of Engineering experiences the tools, systems, and workflows that let them do their best work.

This role leans towards DevEx more than DevOps. Our DevOps foundations are already strong, so the bigger opportunity here is sharpening the day-to-day experience of the engineers who rely on them - build times, tooling, local dev setup, CI/CD friction, the things that quietly speed up or slow down every engineer on the team.

You won't need deep specialist knowledge of either domain on day one. What matters more is that you've been on the other side of this work - a backend software engineer who has felt the difference between good and bad platform tooling, and who knows instinctively what removes friction for engineers versus what just adds process.

In your first 12 months, success looks like this: engineers across the business notice DevEx has got tangibly better, you've built trust and a strong bar across both teams, and you've helped them grow without adding unnecessary process on top of an already solid DevOps base.

🚀 Responsibilities:

  • Build and grow high-performing teams: Lead hiring, onboarding, performance, and progression across both the DevEx and DevOps teams - creating an environment where Staff and Senior Engineers feel supported, challenged, and set up to succeed.

  • Drive delivery through clarity and alignment: Help both teams prioritise, stay focused, and move quickly. You'll create structure without over-engineering, ensuring everyone knows what matters and how to execute on it.

  • Champion developer experience: Understand what actually enables engineers to do great work, and use that to guide where DevEx effort goes. This is the area with the most headroom, and where you'll spend the most attention.

  • Support technical direction: Partner with your Staff and Senior Engineers to guide decision-making, uphold quality, and drive continuous improvement, without stepping on their autonomy or trying to out-expert them.

  • Stay hands-on: Get into the code where it matters most - support the more complex projects, spot problems early, and keep a feel for the work.

  • Create strong cross-functional connections: Act as a bridge between DevEx/DevOps and the wider Engineering org, making sure both teams stay focused on what unblocks the most engineers, not just what's technically interesting.

  • Champion a remote-native culture: Lead with empathy and intention in a fully remote environment, fostering trust and autonomy across two teams, even without regular face time.

🎯 Requirements:

Must haves

  • Backend software engineering background: You've spent your career as a backend engineer, and you understand backend systems well enough to be genuinely credible with Staff and Senior Engineers.

  • Been the client, not just the builder: You've worked as a consumer of platform, DevEx, or DevOps tooling - you know first-hand what good tooling feels like and what actually enables engineers to ship, even if you haven't built these systems yourself.

  • Proven engineering leadership: Experience leading teams in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. You know how to build teams, manage performance, and lead through change.

  • Comfortable managing across two teams: You can hold clarity and momentum across two distinct teams at once, without needing to be the technical expert in either domain.

  • Strong delivery mindset: Comfortable owning delivery outcomes in environments without a traditional delivery function. You bring clarity to ambiguity and help teams move forward without over-process.

  • Remote-first leader: You've led distributed teams successfully and know how to balance autonomy with alignment in an async-first culture.

Nice to haves

  • Direct experience leading a Platform, DevEx, or DevOps team specifically.

  • Familiarity with modern platform technologies (CI/CD, build tooling, developer tooling, internal platforms), even if not deep specialist knowledge.

✨ Benefits & Perks:

  • Competitive salary - our current band for this role is £101,000 or equivalent in local currency.

    • We review salaries twice a year using real-time market data, with transparent, consistent pay for the same role and level.

  • Stock Options - everyone on the team has ownership in our mission.

  • 25 days holiday + public holidays - Swap public holidays for ones that matter most to you. Plus, get an extra day off for your birthday 🎉.

  • Remote & flexible working - We’re fully remote with clear core hours, and no internal meetings on Friday afternoons.

  • Home working & wellbeing budgets:

    • Up to £1,200 / €1,200 annually to upgrade your remote setup (co-working passes, equipment, etc.).

    • Up to £150 / €150 monthly on anything that supports your wellbeing - from therapy to gym memberships to meditation apps.

🗣️ Interview Process:

Our processes normally take around 2-3 weeks from first call to offer - please let us know about any adjustments to timelines that may be required.

  1. First call with our Talent Team (30 min). This is to understand your experience, motivations, and discuss the role in more detail.

  2. Behaviour Interview with our Head of Platform Engineering (45 min). This is your chance to really understand the role, the expectations, and ensure alignment on ways of working.

  3. Skills Interview with the Team (75 min). You’ll meet with potential peers in this session and will discuss how you lead and manage high performing teams, and discuss a range of scenarios.

  4. Culture-Add Interview with Stakeholders (45 min). The final session will be with two cross-functional stakeholders, and will explore how your values align with ours, and is designed to be a genuine two-way conversation, your chance to understand what it’s really like to work at tem.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities, including those that are traditionally underrepresented in the tech and energy sectors. If you’re excited about this role but not sure you meet every requirement, we’d still love to hear from you. Your unique perspective could be exactly what we’re looking for.
