The Director, Behavioral Economics Nudge Unit is the expert leader and internal face of Humana’s industry-leading Behavioral Economics team. The Director brings expertise in applied behavioral science and causal inference, leading a team accountable for answering questions like:
How can Humana use technological solutions to better support healthy member behaviors?
What’s the best way for Humana to respond when a member has a fall?
How can we increase primary care utilization for members who need it most?
In addition to exceptional people leadership and stakeholder management skills, this role requires an ability to think creatively and pragmatically about behavior change interventions, balancing ambition and feasibility to support real-world impact.
Humana’s industry-leading Behavioral Economics team (“Nudge Unit”) acts as an internal consultancy within Humana, applying behavioral science and causal inference tools to answer questions that matter. Team members work in cross-functional environments to design and implement interventions targeting clinical outcomes, financial impacts, and other key factors. The team’s work directly improves outcomes for members, informs business decisions, and influences broader strategies.
The Director is the leader of the BE team, accountable for the team’s delivery of high-impact, high-quality work through:
Developing and executing on a Nudge Unit strategy, including modeling and coaching the prioritization of high-value work
Effective and supportive leadership of the associates on the Nudge team, enabling growth and sustaining high engagement
Internal advocacy and opportunity identification to build the team’s pipeline of high-value work
Quality control, through direct oversight and the management of appropriate processes
Stakeholder management, including alignment-building with senior leaders
Thought leadership across the portfolio, with hands-on involvement as needed
The Director must work autonomously and collaboratively, managing stakeholders at all levels of seniority, and coaching the team to do the same. Success in this role means (1) supporting growth and development for the current team; (2) developing and executing on an effective strategy for the Nudge work; and (3) most importantly, enabling the team to consistently deliver measurable and meaningful impact.
Required Qualifications
Minimum 4 years of people leadership experience in a professional environment
Minimum 6 years developing, implementing, and evaluating behavior change interventions, such as nudges
History of solving problems, creating solutions and driving change within a team
Curious, able to learn from others, and comfortable with ambiguity
Demonstrated ability to articulate ideas effectively & distill key takeaways in written materials and live discussion
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s or PhD Degree in a relevant field
Experience leading consulting engagements
Experience in healthcare, insurance, or related field
Experience in business development, sales, or related functions
Experience conducting economic or behavioral science research

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting.
