Based in Melbourne, Australia with a distributed team across Southeast Asia, we're looking for a Technical Lead to drive engineering excellence across our growing portfolio of client sites.

The Role

Lead a team of 6-8 WordPress developers while ensuring flawless technical delivery across performance optimization projects, development services, and ongoing maintenance for 50+ WooCommerce stores. We're process-driven and committed to maintaining 5-star client satisfaction - you'll follow, refine, and improve our established workflows based on project retrospectives, team feedback, and customer feedback.

Core Responsibilities

Technical Leadership (40%)

  • Own performance optimization strategies across the full WordPress stack
  • Establish and enforce coding standards for WordPress development
  • Technical architecture decisions for complex WooCommerce implementations
  • Core Web Vitals optimization and monitoring

Team Management (30%)

  • Direct management of 6-8 WordPress developers
  • Daily standups, sprint planning, and resource allocation
  • Code reviews and quality assurance processes
  • Mentoring and skill development for team members

Client Delivery (20%)

  • Technical scoping for performance optimization projects
  • Solution architecture for WooCommerce customizations
  • Production issue troubleshooting and resolution
  • Client communication on technical matters

Innovation & Process (10%)

  • Review and improve existing development processes based on retrospectives
  • Optimize workflows and deployment procedures
  • Research and implement new performance techniques
  • Documentation standards and knowledge sharing
  • Technical hiring and onboarding processes

Requirements

Essential Technical Skills

  • 8+ years of WordPress development experience
  • 4+ years working specifically with WooCommerce
  • Expert-level PHP and MySQL optimization
  • Deep knowledge of WordPress performance optimization:
    • Database query optimization
    • Object caching (Redis, Memcached)
    • CDN implementation and configuration
    • Full Site Editing and block development
    • Core Web Vitals optimization
  • Strong experience with WordPress hosting environments (we primarily use Kinsta)
  • Proven track record of achieving sub-2-second load times on complex WooCommerce sites

Leadership Requirements

  • 2+ years managing development teams (minimum 4 developers)
  • Experience delivering multiple concurrent client projects
  • Strong project planning and estimation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication
  • Ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders

Beneficial Skills

  • React/JavaScript knowledge (for occasional legacy headless site support)
  • Experience with performance monitoring tools (GTmetrix, PageSpeed Insights, WebPageTest)
  • WooCommerce plugin development
  • Systems integration experience (ERPs, CRMs, inventory management)
  • DevOps and CI/CD pipeline setup
