Job description

Graphic Design & Data Visualization Specialist, Global (Remote: Europe/Africa time zones preferred, or flexible hours for global collaboration) 

 

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is seeking a Graphic Design and Data Visualization Specialist to strengthen the way our research and data is presented, understood, and shared across global and regional audiences. 


This is a hands-on design role with a global communications focus. The position will support the production of high-quality research products, data visualizations, digital assets, presentations, and templates, while helping IEEFA improve consistency across regions. This position reports to the Global Communications Project Manager. 

The ideal candidate will be a strong designer and problem-solver who can work quickly across formats, make complex energy and finance analysis easier to understand, and help maintain a coherent IEEFA visual identity while allowing room for regional adaptation and creative experimentation. 


IEEFA is an NGO/ not-for-profit that conducts research and analysis on financial and economic issues related to energy markets, trends, and policies. Headquartered in the United States, IEEFA has a team of 70+ analysts and communications personnel located in 16 countries across the globe. IEEFA produces a significant volume of original research, as well as ongoing analysis and reports on issues affecting energy industries. Responsibilities 

Approx 50%: Global design:  

  • Templates: Prepare global reports, fact sheets, newsletters, presentations, and other products using IEEFA templates and brand standards. Potentially review and revise the design of IEEFA templates, e.g. PDF and HTML reports, fact sheets, PPTs, webinar collateral, social media tiles etc.  
  • Data visualization: Work with analysts to identify and create visualizations, including clear and compelling charts, graphs, maps, explainers, etc. 
  • Visual assets: Create graphics and digital assets for IEEFA’s reports, website, social media, webinars, newsletters, short videos/animations, events, presentations, handbooks, and partner/funder materials.  
  • Creative infographics: Develop visual, shareable explainers that make IEEFA’s analysis easier for non-experts to understand, using maps, timelines, comparisons, long-form layouts, and other data journalism and visual storytelling techniques.  
  • Training and guidance: Provide light training/support for regional teams using templates and data visualization software such as Flourish. Contribute to publication and design guidelines, training materials, and other resources, in collaboration with regional designers. Work with regional teams to ensure design consistency. 

 
Approx 50%: Surge support and fill-in for regional teams in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South Asia:  

  • Regional backstop: Take on regional design, formatting, and data visualization projects during periods where regional teams are over-extended. 
  • Temporary regional fill-in: Assigned temporarily, part-time as designer to regional teams for longer periods when needed (e.g. during staff turnover, long leave, extended busy periods, budget gaps), with periodic review. 

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communications, data visualization, digital media, or related, with 4–7 years of relevant professional experience. 
  • Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office templates, Flourish or similar data visualization tools; familiarity with Canva and Drupal or similar; HTML/CSS, UX design, or website-related design implementation is an asset. 
  • Ability to identify opportunities for data visualization and experience turning complex research, data and technical material into clear, accurate and accessible visual products. 
  • Ability to manage multiple design requests, deadlines and stakeholders. 
  • Strong portfolio showing high-quality design work across research reports, presentations, charts, maps, infographics, social media assets, digital products and/or campaign materials. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and a collaborative working style, with the ability to take feedback well, explain design choices clearly, and work constructively with colleagues across regions, roles and time zones. 
  • Excellent written and spoken English. 
  • Availability for occasional early-morning or evening meetings with global colleagues. 
  • Commitment to IEEFA’s mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable, and profitable economy 

 

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Experience working with research, climate, energy, or nonprofit organisations.  
  • Basic HTML/CSS skills, especially for supporting website-related design improvements.  
  • Experience creating short animations, video graphics or interactive visual explainers.  
  • Experience developing or rolling out brand guidelines, templates or shared design systems across teams. 


Terms and Salary 

This is a one-year consultancy with the possibility of longer-term extension dependent on funding and mutual agreement. 
Compensation will be market competitive and will reflect the candidate’s location, experience, skills, and IEEFA’s internal equity considerations. 

 

Location and Work Schedule 

This is a remote, full-time position. Due to collaboration with international teams, early-morning or evening hours may be required to accommodate meetings in different time zones. Frequency will be dependent on home base location.


Travel 

Travel is generally not anticipated for this role. However, global team members attend IEEFA’s conference and international team retreat when scheduled. 


Physical Demand and Work Environment 

Must be able to work for prolonged periods at a computer. Computer work can involve repetitive motion, eyestrain, back and neck strain.
