Description:

The Senior Site Superintendent / Quality Control Manager will support a federal construction renovation project at Ascension Auxiliary Airfield on Ascension Island. This is a remote-site assignment requiring an experienced, independent field leader who can manage daily construction operations, coordinate multiple trades, maintain quality control discipline, identify project risks early, and work professionally with Government personnel, base operations, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.

This is not a typical stateside superintendent position. The selected candidate must be able to live and work on Ascension Island for approximately 180 days at a time and operate effectively in a small-island environment with limited supply-chain flexibility. The role requires strong field leadership, mature judgment, disciplined documentation, proactive problem-solving, and the ability to maintain positive working relationships in a remote community.

The project involves renovation of an existing dormitory facility and includes coordination of architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, roofing, demolition, environmental, and finish work. The Superintendent / QCM will be responsible for maintaining field execution, quality control, subcontractor coordination, schedule awareness, and communication with the remote project management team.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage day-to-day field operations on Ascension Island.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, trades, field crews, material deliveries, inspections, and work sequencing.
  • Serve as the on-site Quality Control Manager if approved and qualified.
  • Implement and maintain the project quality control process, including preparatory, initial, and follow-up inspections.
  • Review drawings, specifications, submittals, RFIs, schedules, and field conditions.
  • Identify risks early and communicate potential impacts to cost, schedule, quality, safety, logistics, and Government acceptance.
  • Maintain daily reports, QC reports, deficiency logs, inspection records, photo documentation, and field issue tracking.
  • Coordinate with Government inspectors, base operations, project management, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Verify that work is performed in accordance with approved submittals, contract documents, drawings, specifications, and applicable standards.
  • Support progress reporting, schedule updates, look-ahead planning, and field coordination meetings.
  • Monitor material status and coordinate with the project team regarding procurement, shipping, staging, storage, and installation priorities.
  • Support safety compliance and reinforce safe work practices in coordination with the project SSHO or safety representative.
  • Ensure deficiencies are documented, tracked, corrected, and closed before work is covered or accepted.
  • Maintain professional conduct and effective working relationships in a remote, small-island environment.
  • Communicate clearly with the project team regarding field progress, constraints, manpower, material needs, schedule risks, and required decisions.
Qualifications:
  • Prior experience as a Superintendent, Quality Control Manager, Construction Manager, or similar field leadership role on construction projects.
  • Prior federal construction experience with DoD, USACE, NAVFAC, Air Force, Space Force, GSA, VA, or similar Government projects.
  • Experience managing multi-trade vertical construction or renovation work.
  • Ability to live and work on Ascension Island for approximately 180 days at a time.
  • Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
  • Strong knowledge of construction sequencing, field coordination, quality control, and subcontractor management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong documentation skills, including daily reports, QC reports, deficiency logs, inspection records, and photo documentation.
  • Valid passport or ability to obtain required travel documentation before deployment.
  • Ability to complete required travel, medical readiness, and theater clearance requirements before assignment.
  • Ability to work professionally with Government personnel, inspectors, base operations, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Current Construction Quality Management for Contractors certificate.
  • OSHA 30 Construction.
  • Prior remote-site, OCONUS, island, military installation, contingency, embassy, or austere-location construction experience.
  • Prior experience with barracks, dormitory, lodging, housing, or occupied facility renovation projects.
  • Experience with MEP replacement, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, fire protection, roofing, demolition, environmental controls, and interior finishes.
  • Prior experience coordinating logistics for remote construction projects.
  • Prior experience working with Air Force, Space Force, USACE, NAVFAC, or other federal inspection and acceptance processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems early, communicate clearly, and resolve issues without creating unnecessary conflict.
