Description

The AB Deckhand is directly responsible and accountable to the Captain or Relief Captain, working directly under them and following instructions. Deckhand duties vary from vessel to vessel and from watch to watch. The Captain sets the watch standing schedule and posts the duty list for the crew. The Captain, or their relief, must ensure that the Deckhand stands the proper watch and performs the proper duties.


  • Assisting in making/breaking the tow;
  • Standing lookout, or riding the head of the tow as a lookout;
  • Performing the various tasks necessary to carry out the above, such as making a connection, operating winches, and line handling, including splicing and throwing lines;
  • Ensure that the decks are kept clear, and all unnecessary equipment is properly stowed at all times for existing or possible
  • Chipping and painting
  • Greasing winches and other equipment maintenance as
  • Assisting in the Engine room when nee
  • Cleaning or scouring the boat, including personal quarters;
  • Cleaning the wheelhouse, galley, heads and companionways;
  • Maintaining the barge as necessary, grease winches, dogs on hatch covers, etc.
  • Reporting any hazardous or unsafe condition to the Captain and making "on-the-spot" corrections
  • While on duty, the Deckhand will perform an inspection of the engine room and bilge every hour

  • Valid MMC with AB Unlimited, AB Limited or AB Special Credential
  • Valid Coast Guard Medical Card
  • Valid TWIC
  • 1-3 Years' experience (preferably working for a tugboat company)
