Job description

What You'll Do:

As a Tax Director on Avalara’s Global Tax team, the team responsible for Avalara’s internal tax matters, you will report to the Vice President of Tax and play a key leadership role in two areas.  First, you will lead technology-focused tax transformation efforts, including process improvement, AI-enabled workflows, automation, and support for broader company technology initiatives that affect tax. You will help modernize how the tax function operates by improving speed, accuracy, scalability, and data quality.  Second, you will lead Avalara’s indirect tax function, including tax accounting, compliance, planning, audits, and related controls. This role combines strategic process leadership with hands-on ownership of core indirect tax responsibilities.  This is a remote managerial role based in the United States and includes direct people leadership.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be:

Lead tax technology, process improvement, and AI adoption

  • Lead technology and process improvement initiatives across the Global Tax function, with an emphasis on automation, scalability, data quality, and operational efficiency.
  • Serve as the tax team’s AI champion by developing detailed working knowledge of company-approved AI tools, identifying practical use cases, guiding teammates on approved tools and responsible use, leading small pilots, and sharing feedback to support broader adoption and governance.
  • Represent the tax function in cross-functional system implementations, upgrades, and process changes to ensure tax requirements are identified early and addressed effectively.
  • Partner with Tax, Finance, Accounting, IT, Product, and other stakeholders to improve system integration, data flows, and tax-relevant reporting.
  • Support broader company technology initiatives by owning tax-related requirements, impacts, risks, and implementation considerations.

Lead indirect tax accounting, compliance, and audits

  • Oversee the indirect tax lifecycle, including tax accounting, return preparation and review, filings, payments, reconciliations, and related reporting.
  • Maintain and review indirect tax general ledger accounts and related supporting schedules.
  • Review tax calculations, filings, and supporting documentation to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Lead indirect tax research, audits, notices, controversy matters, and monitoring of law changes, while maintaining strong documentation and internal controls.
  • Manage and develop team members and help ensure high-quality, timely execution across the function.
What You'll Need to be Successful:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or advanced degree (MST/JD/LLM) is a plus.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in public accounting, industry, or a combination of both.
  • People leadership experience, including managing, developing, and coaching team members.
  • Familiarity with AI and automation tools such as n8n, Alteryx, and ChatGPT, with sound judgment around practical business use.
  • Demonstrated ability working with large datasets, structured data, or financial systems and to improve processes through technology, automation, or systems change.
  • Strong communication and project management skills, with the ability to influence across teams and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong experience in indirect tax, including tax accounting, compliance, audits, and operational processes in a global environment.
  • Strong research, analytical, and documentation skills with attention to detail and controls.
  • Proficiency in Excel and comfort working with large datasets, structured data, and reconciliations.
  • Familiarity with general ledger systems; experience with NetSuite a plus.
