Assistant Editor, Day-Of News Desk
WNYC/Gothamist
 
The WNYC and Gothamist newsroom is looking for an enterprising and curious Assistant Editor to join our Day-of News desk. This multiplatform role will oversee daily content for both our on-air and digital platforms.
 
The Assistant Editor plays an integral role on one of the newsroom’s largest teams, covering breaking news and ensuring that the most relevant, timely news makes it to our airwaves and website. They are a versatile player-coach – a journalist who can edit and report on stories while also mentoring reporters. This person will have strong news judgement, editing and reporting skills, and creative, engaging ideas. The Assistant Editor upholds the highest standards of journalistic quality and integrity, ensuring that our journalism is timely, accurate, clear, thorough, fair, and impactful.
 
This role, which reports to the Senior Editor of the Day-of News desk, is assigned to work a morning shift Monday through Friday.
 
Responsibilities: 
  • Oversee our on-air and digital coverage each morning
  • Take on other editing duties as assigned 
  • Help mentor and coach reporters through pitches and edits
  • Assist with organizing daily and long-term coverage planning
  • Create engaging journalism that attracts loyal and diverse audiences in digital, on-air, on-demand audio and social
  • Adhere to the highest journalistic standards -- from breaking news to longform features
  • Collaborate with newsroom peers and partners across the organization on relevant content and projects
  • Foster a culture of accountability, creativity and innovation in storytelling
  • Uphold and evangelize the strategic vision and goals of the Day-of News desk 
 Qualifications: 
  • Minimum of 5 years professional journalism experience, including some management experience and editorial leadership experience
  • Excellent news judgement
  • Ability to lead and convey feedback to reporters
  • Ability to anticipate reader interests and pursue stories that will engage readers and listeners
  • Deft writing and editing skills, including the ability to sharpen or rewrite copy with precision under immediate deadline pressure
  • Sophisticated communication skills, including oral, written, and public speaking
  • Deep commitment to accurate, ethical journalism
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complex social and cultural issues
  • Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking 
  • Ability to manage several projects concurrently
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of people development and management processes, and ability to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion competency in newsrooms
Additional Information: 
This is a full-time role with an annual salary range of $97,000 to $ 102,000. New York Public Radio also offers excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, personal and sick time as well as inclusive family leave.
 
This role is a hybrid capacity, with the ability to work from home at times. However, this position is part of the NYC staff and will be expected to work from WNYC's Lower Manhattan offices on specified days with regularity.
