We are seeking a Senior BI Developer specializing in the Microsoft BI stack to design, build, and maintain enterprise reporting and analytics solutions on Power BI. This role owns the full development lifecycle: gathering requirements, modeling data, authoring DAX, building semantic models, designing performant and visually compelling reports, and supporting the underlying Power BI Service and data gateway infrastructure.
The successful candidate will partner with business stakeholders, data engineers, and IT to deliver trusted, well-governed datasets and reports. You will serve as the go-to expert for troubleshooting Power BI Service issues, gateway connectivity, refresh failures, and model performance.
You are a hands-on BI developer with deep Microsoft expertise and a designerβs eyeβyou care as much about how a report reads as how fast it runs. You think in star schemas, write DAX fluently, and can diagnose a slow visual by reading a DAX Studio query plan. You are comfortable owning semantic models end-to-end and remain calm when a gateway goes down during month-end close.
Model Architecture: Design and build enterprise-grade Power BI semantic models (Import, DirectQuery, Composite, and Direct Lake) using star-schema best practices to ensure scalability and reusability.
Advanced DAX: Author and optimize complex DAX measures and calculation groups (time intelligence, semi-additive measures, dynamic security patterns) and tune them using DAX Studio and Performance Analyzer.
ETL & Data Shaping: Build and maintain Power Query (M) transformations, parameterized datasets, and reusable dataflows; implement incremental refresh and partitioning strategies.
Security & Governance: Implement Row-Level Security (RLS) and Object-Level Security (OLS); manage workspace roles, app audiences, and dataset permissions.
Data Integration: Source data from SQL Server, Azure SQL, Synapse, Fabric Lakehouse/Warehouse, Dataverse, SharePoint, and REST APIs.
Visual Design: Apply strong visual design principles (layout, typography, color, accessibility) to deliver intuitive, executive-ready dashboards. Build paginated reports via Power BI Report Builder when required.
Gateway Management: Install, configure, and maintain on-premises data gateways (standard and personal), including clustering for high availability and version upgrades.
Troubleshooting: Resolve Power BI Service issues end-to-end, including refresh failures, gateway connectivity, memory/timeout errors, capacity throttling, and rendering problems.
Capacity Management: Manage workspaces, deployment pipelines, and Premium/Fabric capacities; monitor metrics to tune workloads against performance and cost targets.
Operations & On-Call: Support tenant-level governance (naming conventions, certified datasets, audit logs). Participate in an on-call rotation for refresh windows and month/quarter-end close.
Stakeholder Management: Serve as the primary BI point of contact for assigned business areas (Finance, Sales, Operations); gather requirements and translate them into specifications and mockups.
ALM & Version Control: Use deployment pipelines and source control (Git / Azure DevOps) to promote changes through Dev $\rightarrow$ Test $\rightarrow$ Prod environments.
Documentation: Maintain clear documentation for semantic models, measure definitions, data lineage, report catalogs, and operational runbooks.
Experience: 5+ years of hands-on Power BI development experience, including production ownership of enterprise-scale semantic models.
Expert DAX: Deep understanding of variables, advanced filter context manipulation, and performance tuning via DAX Studio.
Data Modeling: Mastery of star schema design, role-playing dimensions, many-to-many relationships, and data storage trade-offs.
Power Query & SQL: Strong Power Query (M) skills (query folding, incremental refresh) and proficiency in T-SQL for data validation and profiling.
Infrastructure Administration: Proven experience with on-premises data gateway installation, clustering, and Service-level troubleshooting.
Soft Skills: Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; able to explain complex technical trade-offs in plain business language.
Experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Warehouse, Direct Lake, Dataflows Gen2, Pipelines).
Familiarity with advanced external tools: Tabular Editor 3 and ALM Toolkit.
Certifications: PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) or DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer).
Work Hours: Flexibility to work across different time zones to align with global operational hours.
Workspace: A dedicated, distraction-free home office environment ensuring high productivity.
Infrastructure: A stable, high-speed internet connection and familiarity with remote collaboration tools.
Culture: High cultural sensitivity and the ability to work effectively within a highly diverse global team.
