THE OPPORTUNITY
As part of our diverse Sydney‑based team, you’ll help make a positive and practical impact on injured workers’ recovery every day. You’ll gain strong professional satisfaction knowing your clinical expertise and judgement directly contribute to timely recovery, early intervention, and improved return to work (RTW) outcomes.
In the Claims Treatment Specialist – General Practitioner role, you will utilise your medical expertise to conduct targeted reviews of workers compensation claims identified as having a higher risk of delayed return to work within selected pilot groups. Your focus will be on early identification of clinical, treatment, and recovery barriers, supporting evidence‑based intervention, and optimising claim outcomes.
You will support claims teams by ensuring the right medical and recovery‑focused questions are considered during claim management and treatment decision‑making. This includes reviewing medical treatment, capacity certifications, recovery trajectories, and clinical management strategies in line with SIRA’s Clinical Framework for the Delivery of Health Services.
You will work closely with treating General Practitioners, specialists, allied health providers, and internal stakeholders to support timely, coordinated, and outcome‑focused medical management. A key component of the role is building capability within operational teams through education, clinical guidance, and medical insight to strengthen early intervention approaches and improve RTW outcomes.
This dynamic role suits a GP who enjoys clinical reasoning, collaboration, systems improvement, and influencing positive recovery behaviours across complex claims.
This is a part‑time role, 12‑month contract position, based in the Sydney office, with flexibility to work from home for part of the contracted hours.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct targeted file reviews on claims identified with a higher risk of delayed RTW, providing timely medical opinions to support early intervention strategies.
Analyse medical records, treatment plans, work capacity certifications, and recovery progress to identify barriers to recovery and RTW.
Provide clear, evidence‑based clinical advice to claims teams to inform claim decisions, treatment approvals, and recovery planning.
Engage, liaise, and negotiate with treating General Practitioners, medical specialists, and allied health providers to clarify clinical rationale, recovery expectations, and treatment direction.
Support alignment of medical management with capacity‑based, function‑focused, and RTW‑oriented approaches, consistent with SIRA guidelines.
Identify the need for additional supports, referrals, or independent services (e.g. Independent Medical Examinations or specialist opinions) where appropriate.
Educate and support claims teams on medical issues, recovery pathways, certification interpretation, and best‑practice early intervention strategies.
Contribute to pilot evaluation activities and continuous improvement initiatives aimed at improving treatment quality, clinical decision‑making, and RTW outcomes.
ABOUT YOU
Medical degree with current registration as a General Practitioner with AHPRA.
Demonstrated clinical experience in general practice.
You are currently practising as a General Practitioner and will retain at least part‑time private practice exposure while undertaking this role, ensuring peer‑to‑peer conversations with treating doctors are current, clinically relevant, and grounded in contemporary practice realities.
Strong understanding of injury recovery, disability management, and best practice medical management principles.
Knowledge of, or experience within, the personal injury or workers compensation environment (highly regarded).
Well‑developed clinical reasoning skills with the ability to translate medical findings into practical, recovery‑focused recommendations.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with confidence engaging and negotiating with medical practitioners to influence outcomes and support RTW conversations.
