  • Identify and coordinate with medical experts; assist in preparing experts for depositions and trials; draft expert affidavits and medical visuals
  • Maintain case databases and file systems, prepare medical chronology, and support deposition/trial readiness including correspondence and legal documentation

Job description

JOB PURPOSE

The primary responsibility of the Medical Analyst is to assist the attorney with the administration and preparation of all medical assessments, discovery and research on various client files or potential Medical Negligence claims.

Flexible Work Schedule: Robins Kaplan LLP offers employees the benefit of flexible work schedules. This position has the option of working remotely 2 days per week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Medical Analyst has direct case responsibility for the following, under minimal supervision by the file’s responsible attorney:

  • Assist in triage of potential clients through phone calls or e-mail
  • Determine medical records necessary for complete case review and obtain same.
  • Assess care and treatment through review of medical records. Interpret data to determine validity of claim.
  • Conduct medical research regarding subject areas and standards of care.
  • Prepare memoranda to attorney regarding facts and opinions of assigned case.
  • Locate treating physicians and fact witnesses. Prepare and assist attorney with interviews of same.
  • Identify, locate and secure services of experts in subject area.
  • Maintain client contact to remain cognizant of ongoing medical condition and ensure up-to-date medical records.
  • Prepare and keep current a chronology of medical events for easy review.
  • Prepare and assist attorney for depositions and/or trial as needed.
  • Attend interviews with medical experts. Assist attorney to prepare expert for deposition and/or trial as needed.
  • Assist attorney in drafting expert affidavits.
  • Assist in selecting, obtaining, and/or preparing medical visuals, assuring relevance and accuracy.
  • Attend depositions/trials involving medical cases as needed.
  • Draft letters for attorney approval in cases which are declined.
  • Maintain database of cases being reviewed and their status, including statute of limitations.
  • Develop and maintain file systems for large and complex litigation, including tickler system for client/case follow-up.
  • Utilize computer databases (LawBase) and Internet resources as needed.

KNOWLEDGE OR SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Acquire and maintain working medical knowledge of the facts of each case or potential case and apply legal principles to those facts.
  • Keen analytical, research and investigative ability, strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize assignments according to time lines and importance of task.
  • Ability to exercise accurate professional and legal judgment, and to understand and apply ethical standards required by American Bar Association.
  • Computer proficiency and familiarity with litigation support systems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Interactional proficiency with peers, clients and other professionals.
  • Ability to design and develop demonstrative medical evidence and other pertinent documents critically impacting outcome of files.
  • Ability to simultaneously handle numerous assignments, time lines and people, on a daily basis.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred as well as current registered nursing license in State of Minnesota.  Advanced degree in other medical specialties also considered. Labor and delivery and obstetrics experience strongly preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION 

Work is performed in a professional office environment and requires the following during the work day:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time (working at a computer)
  • Ability to move/traverse about inside the office intermittently throughout the day (attend meetings, access file cabinets, obtain supplies from supply room, etc.)
  • Operate computer and other office equipment such as a copy machine, printer, telephone, etc.
  • Repetitive movement (i.e. heavy computer/keyboard use).
  • Individual will interact regularly with others verbally, in-person, and via written communication.
  • May require occasional light lifting (files, copy paper, etc.).

IN ADDITION TO THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OUTLINED ABOVE

  •  Individual in this position will provide additional assistance and support as directed by his/her supervisor.
  •  Overtime or extra work hours may be required depending on workload, trial schedule, and travel may also be required.
  •  This job description is subject to change at any time. 

The hourly pay rate for this position is $51.95 - $65.64 per hour, depending on experience. This is a non-exempt position eligible for overtime. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job related factors permitted by law.
