Orbital is currently seeking a Senior Vice President of Utility Services within the Utility Services team for a REMOTE WORK role.

Orbital is seeking a highly skilled, critical thinker, analytical, and proactive professional. The selected individual will assume the role of Senior Vice President of Utility Services, leading organizational strategy and coordinating efforts across Orbital’s engineering, design, and construction teams nationwide. This position entails national duties, managing the division's financial stability, promoting team growth and development, and building strong client relationships.

This role is responsible for overseeing the operational control of our national utility team that serves electric and natural gas utility clients. It includes tracking project deliverables, developing management strategies, reporting on performance metrics, and monitoring contract milestones. Key duties involve managing the utility services team and efforts to improve power delivery reliability, reviewing high-profile client proposals, issuing formal communication notices, resolving contract compliance issues, staying updated on policy changes, and presenting to senior management.

Additionally, the role includes coordinating tasks, evaluating priorities, providing mentorship, and guiding our Vice Presidents and/or Directors who oversee engineering, design, and construction teams. 

The ideal candidate is a high-performing, experienced self-starter who excels in leadership, written and oral communication, and customer service. They should have the ability to develop and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships. Orbital culture values safety, communication, accountability, professionalism, integrity, and respect.  This position is reports directly to the Executive Vice President of Energy Delivery and Enterprise Technology and serves as a key member of the senior leadership team, contributing to enterprise-wide strategy, investment decisions, and long-term growth planning.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Own and be accountable for the overall financial performance of the Utility Services Division, prioritizing revenue growth, cost control, and improving organizational metrics.
  • Oversee all utility services departments, including transmission engineering, substation engineering, distribution engineering, joint use, construction, construction management, and natural gas engineering services.
  • Create and execute initiatives that are aligned with the company's strategic plan for the Utility Services Division.
  • Manage departmental project budgets, schedules, and profitability to ensure projects meet scope, deadlines, and budget limits.
  • Create and execute strategies to improve operational efficiency and attain favorable financial outcomes, while maintaining high standards of quality and deliverables.
  • Responsible for managing contracts and overseeing the operational control of Orbital’s engineering, design, and construction programs.
  • Create presentations for key decision makers, senior leadership, and clients that encompass expert advice, summaries, and briefs of requested data, all tailored to their needs.
  • Track compliance with the contract using performance metrics and reporting requirements outlined in the agreement. Handle performance issues and disputes promptly, issuing formal written notices when needed.
  • Monitor industry trends, regulations, and technological advancements to maintain the company's competitiveness.
  • Guide, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of leaders, fostering a culture grounded in innovation, excellence, and continuous growth.
  • Develop and execute strategies for attracting, retaining, and developing talent to build a strong pipeline of future leaders.
  • Lead the adoption of emerging technologies and digital solutions, such as grid modernization, data analytics, and automation, to improve service delivery and increase client value.
  • Drive efforts to expand our client base by identifying new business opportunities and enhancing existing relationships.
  • Participate actively in client presentations, industry conferences, contract negotiations, and project assessments.
  • Manages divisional design quality and program coordination for utility clients nationwide.
  • Prepare, review, and approve proposals and project estimates for large client projects.
  • Provide outstanding customer service to current clients and address issues quickly, ensuring prompt responses to both internal and external clients.
  • Establish yourself as a trusted advisor to our clients by providing technical expertise, industry insights, and solutions for complex engineering challenges.
  • Represent the company at industry conferences, panels, seminars, and forums to increase visibility, bolster the brand, and grow its influence within the utility sector.
  • Lead contract negotiations, oversee contract renewals to retain clients and grow business.
  • Travel of up to 50%

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, civil, mechanical, or structural engineering, or a related field, with equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant utility and/or consulting experience supporting investor-owned utilities, including 8-10 years in leadership roles.
  • Proven record of success in managing P&L, optimizing operations, and developing new business opportunities.
  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills, including experience in developing employees, maintaining retention, and promoting a collaborative work environment.
  • Ability to drive results by delivering on KPIs, ensuring both operational excellence and profitability.
  • Experience in utility operations at the national level, covering both electric and natural gas sectors.
  • Established network and reputation within the utility industry, with experience in representing the company at industry events.
  • Experience with analyzing data, financial reporting, data inventory management, and program auditing (e.g., Excel, Access, etc.).
  • Ability to negotiate and develop relationships with contracting parties.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively organize multiple assignments, complex assignments, and competing priorities to produce accurate products on time.
  • Able to travel frequently to meet clients, attend industry events, and oversee the organization's national operations, including on short notice.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry regulations, safety standards, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in business development and growing a book of business
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Project Management Certification
This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.
Location Note:
This is a remote work position. Compensation is based on market data and internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s location.
Salary Range:
$275,000 - $325,000 annually (based on experience, qualifications, and location)
Bonus/Commission:
Eligible for performance-based bonuses
