Our Client, a Communications company, is looking for a Principal Engineer & Energy Manager to work remotely based in Colorado.
Responsibilities:
Provide technical leadership and quality assurance for telecom utility power systems supporting fiber huts, edge data centers, and remote network facilities.
Activities include establishing and enforcing engineering standards; reviewing and approving designs, power usage studies, and PUE calculations; and ensuring compliance with applicable telecom codes, internal standards, and client requirements.
Provide technical oversight of utility substation and electrical power system designs, support site selection and business development activities, and lead energy partnership and leasing support efforts in coordination with utilities, independent power providers, data center developers, and internal legal, finance, and engineering teams.
Monitoring, reporting, and improving Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) performance through defined targets, benchmarking, and corrective actions to enhance energy efficiency, reliability, and cost performance.
Deliverables
Engineering standards, design reviews, and QA/QC documentation for telecom utility power systems.
Power usage and efficiency study reports, including PUE calculations and supporting analyses.
Technical support and due diligence materials for energy partnerships, leasing arrangements, and powered land evaluations.
Monthly PUE performance reports, including variance analysis and corrective action recommendations.
Main Responsibilities
Utility Engineering
Lead technical standards and best practices for telecom utility power systems and telecom site integration.
Oversee QA/QC processes for deliverables impacting network power, capacity, reliability, and uptime.
Mentor engineering staff and serve as primary technical contact for clients and internal stakeholders.
Ensure compliance with telecom codes, Client standards, and client specifications.
Design and review utility substation electrical power systems supporting telecom sites (fiber huts, edge data centers, remote shelters).
Prepare and review power usage studies (power density, material albedo, battery technologies, PUE calculations, building codes).
Support business development and field troubleshooting concerns across departments.
Energy Partnerships & Leasing
Build and strengthen relationships with independent power providers, edge data center developers/lease providers, utilities, and key stakeholders.
Collaborate with Legal to structure commercial agreements for strategic partnerships; support energy diligence and contracting for Power Purchase Arrangements (PPA).
Partner with Client Site Selection teams to evaluate powered-land opportunities and identify new U.S. locations for near-term energy capacity and long-term utility growth.
Coordinate with engineering/design, site development, sustainability, network, policy, communications, construction, legal, and finance teams.
Support development and execution of the data center energy supply strategy; lead and contribute to energy projects as business needs evolve.
Efficiency & Reporting — Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) Targets
Monitor and report PUE for telecom; set baselines and annual targets and drive continuous improvement in energy efficiency and cost performance.
Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) Targets:
Telecom/Edge Data Center Sites: Strive for operational PUE ≤ 1.35 (efficient), with stretch goals ≤ 1.25 for modern builds and ≤ 2.0 for legacy or temporary shelters.
Publish monthly PUE reports and corrective actions for variances 5% vs. target.
Benchmark and improve PUE in line with industry standards (average PUE for modern facilities is 1.2–1.5; legacy sites may be higher).
Requirements:
Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, business, environmental science, energy, or related field.
7+ years of relevant engineering or field experience (telecom or utility environments).
