Mux is video for developers. Our mission is to democratize video by solving the hard problems developers face when building video: video encoding and streaming (Mux Video), video monitoring (Mux Data), and more. Video is a huge part of people’s lives, and we want to help make it better.
We’re committed to building a healthy team that welcomes diverse backgrounds and experiences. We want people who care about our mission, are ready to grow, believe in our values (from Be Human to Turn Customers Into Fans), and want to improve the people around them.
You’ll join a tight-knit team with experience at places like Google, YouTube, Twitch, Reddit, Zencoder, Fastly, and more. Our founders previously started (and sold) Zencoder, an early leader in cloud video technology, and authored Video.js, the biggest HTML5 video player on the web. We organize Demuxed, the premier conference for video engineers in the world.
We’re backed by top investors like Coatue, Accel, Andreessen Horowitz, and Y Combinator. You’ll get to work with amazing companies: hundreds of startups, plus Strava, Patreon, Vimeo, Robinhood, PBS, and Equinox. Customers, large and small, love working with us and love our team.
We are building something big together. We’d love to hear from you!
As a Staff Software Engineer on the Platform Engineering Team at Mux, you will lead the design, evolution, and long-term strategy of the infrastructure that powers Mux’s high-traffic, distributed platform. You will operate as a technical leader across teams, shaping architecture, influencing engineering direction, and driving platform investments that enable the company to scale.
Our Platform Engineering team works cross-functionally to ensure that services are scalable, reliable, and easy to operate. At the Staff level, you will go beyond contributing to systems to define how those systems evolve over time. You will partner deeply with product and engineering leadership to identify opportunities, remove systemic friction, and build shared abstractions that improve the velocity and effectiveness of the entire organization.
We’re looking for an engineer who thrives in ambiguity, has a strong track record of building and evolving large-scale infrastructure, and is motivated by solving complex, cross-cutting problems. If you are passionate about Kubernetes, platform design, and raising the bar for engineering across teams, you should keep reading!
Lead the architecture and evolution of core platform systems. Define and drive the technical direction of our container orchestration, cloud infrastructure, and CI/CD platforms to meet the long-term needs of the business
Own cross-team technical strategy. Identify high-leverage investments, align stakeholders, and execute on initiatives that span multiple teams and products
Build and evolve shared platform abstractions. Create scalable, well-designed interfaces and tooling that enable product teams to move faster
Drive improvements to engineering processes. Lead the definition and rollout of practices that improve reliability, efficiency, and scalability (e.g., deployment strategies, incident response, architecture reviews)
Shape and prioritize technical investments. Define and advocate for infrastructure and technical debt initiatives across teams, aligning them with product and architectural goals
Debug and resolve complex production issues. Provide leadership during incidents and tackle the most challenging problems across the full infrastructure stack
Mentor and influence engineers across the organization. Raise the bar for technical decision-making, design quality, and operational excellence
Proven track record of designing and evolving large-scale, business-critical infrastructure systems, particularly Kubernetes platforms
Strong ability to operate at a systems and architectural level, making decisions that impact multiple teams and long-term business direction
Deep experience with Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD systems
Strong software engineering skills (preferably in the Go ecosystem) for building reliable and maintainable systems
Deep knowledge of networking and systems fundamentals (TCP/UDP, HTTP, TLS, DNS, Linux)
Demonstrated ability to lead ambiguous, cross-functional initiatives and drive them to successful outcomes
Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to influence both engineers and engineering leadership
Video technologies (ingest, live-streaming, RTMP routing, content delivery, global networking)
Event streaming platforms or data pipelines (Apache Kafka)
Distributed databases (CockroachDB, ClickHouse)
Edge networking and service mesh technologies (Envoy, Cilium or similar)
