A Brief Overview
Coding Educator will provide ongoing coding compliance and education to HIM coding staff, perform chart reviews as outlined by management, work in collaboration with Clinical Documentation Improvement and Quality Teams with emphasis on mortality, risk adjustment and quality measures. Educator must have skillset to conduct training sessions with emphasis on coding guidelines, government regulations and third-party payor requirements.
Education Qualifications
- High School Diploma / GED Required
Experience Qualifications
- 5 years Hospital inpatient and ambulatory surgery coding experience (assignment of ICD-10-DX, ICD-10-PX and CPT codes). Required
Skills and Abilities
- Extensive understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, ICD-10-DX, ICD-10-PCS, CPT Coding.
- Experience with Solventum products and Epic.
- Experience with 360 Encompass workflows, CDI Program, Quality Measures, Revenue Cycle.
- Experience with coding and regulatory guidelines.
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) - AHIMA Required or
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) - AHIMA Required and
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) - AHIMA
What you will do
- Maintain a working knowledge of ICD-10-DX, ICD-10-PCS and CPT-4 classifications and coding of diagnoses and procedures, governmental regulations, protocols and third-party requirements.
- Coordinate and conduct inpatient and outpatient coding chart reviews to ensure compliance with coding and documentation guidelines, including compliance of coding queries. Analyze results from reviews to identify areas of improvement and report findings to coding staff and coding manager.
- Create and deliver comprehensive training and education to coders, providers and clinical staff as appropriate. Provide continual coding, quality and payor updates to coding staff.
- Serve as a resource to coding, CDI and quality teams with regard to coding guidelines, rules and regulations to ensure compliant reimbursement.
- Assist with DRG, RAC and other payor denials on inpatient and outpatient service for identifying trends, providing education on coding issues identified. Responds to outside audit requests when requested by manager. Maintains audit schedules, findings and education for all hospital audits.
- Commitment to LEAN/Performance Excellence processes established within the coding department and ability to identify process improvements. Travel Requirements
- 10% Travel to provide education to coding and clinical teams as appropriate.
