Senior Automation & Virtualisation Infrastructure Engineer

We are seeking a Senior Automation & Virtualisation Infrastructure Engineer to join the ICT Operations Branch, within the Networks & Infrastructure Platforms Section.

This role sits within the Infrastructure Platforms team, which is responsible for the operation and strategic improvement of the Department’s data centre, virtualisation, automation, storage, backup and disaster recovery platforms. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining platform stability, enhancing automation capability, and supporting business‑critical ICT services across the department and Ministers’ Offices.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Automation & Virtualisation Infrastructure Engineer will be responsible for:

• Managing, maintaining and enhancing the Department’s VMware ecosystem, including:
  
  • Aria Automation
    
  • Aria Orchestrator
    
  • Aria Operations
    
  • VMware NSX
    
  • Site Recovery Manager (SRM)
    
  • VMware vSphere and Cloud Foundation environments
    
• Supporting enterprise on‑premises server infrastructure, including rack‑mounted and blade server platforms.
  
• Designing, building and supporting automation workflows and infrastructure services to improve operational efficiency and reliability.
  
• Performing platform monitoring, capacity planning, troubleshooting and remediation to ensure high availability and performance.
  
• Supporting disaster recovery and backup capabilities, including DR testing and recovery planning.
  
• Participating in after‑hours on‑call support for on‑premises infrastructure, as required.
  
• Producing high‑quality design documents, build guides, operational runbooks and handover documentation.
  
• Sharing knowledge within the team and mentoring junior engineers to uplift capability.
  
• Working collaboratively with other infrastructure, security and service management teams to deliver reliable ICT services.

Automation & Scripting

Proven scripting and automation experience using some of the following:

• Strong ability to produce clear, accurate and maintainable:

  • Operational and support procedures

Desirable Experience

• Experience administering enterprise backup and recovery solutions (e.g. Veeam).
  
• Experience working in Federal Government or highly regulated environments.
  
• Familiarity with ICT service management practices (e.g. ITIL).
  
• Experience supporting large‑scale, mission‑critical on‑premises infrastructure.
