Job description

The ICCT is looking for an enthusiastic Researcher to join the organization’s Program team. This position will contribute to ICCT’s efforts to support Chile and other Latin American governments committed to decarbonizing the heavy-duty (trucks and buses) segment, with a focus on supply-side regulations such as fuel-efficiency standards and zero-emission vehicle sales requirements. This is an opportunity to be ICCT’s first staff member based in Chile, serving as ICCT’s primary representative in the country and playing a role in shaping ICCT’s presence in the region. You will provide technical and policy support to government agencies developing vehicle efficiency standards and manage engagement with key stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will bring knowledge of the transportation sector and environmental/energy topics, modeling and analytical skills, project management experience, written and spoken fluency in English and Spanish, strong written and verbal communication skills, and a demonstrated interest in solving our most pressing global health and environmental challenges. This opportunity is best suited to someone who is self-motivated, resourceful, creative, curious, and willing to work hard and learn fast.

This position will be based in Chile and report to ICCT’s Program Director in Latin America.

YOU WILL:

  • Represent ICCT in Chile as the organization's first in-country staff member, serving as a primary point of contact for local government agencies, NGOs, industry partners, and media while embodying ICCT’s mission, values, and ways of working in all external engagements.
  • Manage and deliver ICCT’s technical support and stakeholder outreach activities in Chile. These include, among others, supporting the development of vehicle efficiency standards and securing their proper implementation.
  • Support policy needs with critical analysis of best-practice policy action to promote the deployment of zero-emission vehicles in Chile. This includes, among others, supply-side regulations, incentives, and charging infrastructure deployment.
  • Perform technical analyses on the potential of fuel consumption reduction technologies and their cost-effectiveness using established ICCT methodologies and tools.
  • Write strong technical reports, policy briefings, and policy-relevant documents to summarize ICCT’s research for key stakeholders.
  • Organize outreach opportunities, and engage with external stakeholders, including government officials, non-governmental organizations, academics, and industry.

YOU HAVE:

  • M.Sc or Ph.D. in engineering, environmental science, environmental policy, energy and resources, transportation, or relevant field.
  • 3+ years of applicable research experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct technical analysis and write reports related to vehicle efficiency, electric vehicle technology, and transportation decarbonization policies.
  • Strong proficiency with data manipulation and analysis tools. Experience with R or Python is preferred.
  • Experience with vehicle simulation tools (e.g., Autonomie, Amesim, VECTO, GEM) is a plus.
  • Strong experience with Chilean policy-making processes and established connections within Chilean government, industry, and NGOs is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated stakeholder engagement experience, particularly in building relationships and facilitating collaboration among groups in policy development contexts, is highly desirable.
  • Strong English and Spanish communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong problem-solving, interpersonal, and strategic thinking capabilities coupled with an outcome delivery-oriented approach.
  • Availability for occasional national and international travel.
