RESPONSIBILITIES AND ASSIGNMENTS


Pearson seeks a Technical Architect to own end-to-end technical design for the Innovation Squad: AI-powered and data-backed solutions, security and trust boundaries, integration patterns, and non-functional requirements. You turn business intent into phased roadmaps and validate options with stakeholders. Architecture is captured as versioned artifacts (diagram-as-code, ADRs, threat models as structured repository content) and enforced through Architectural Fitness Agents (AFAs), not as standalone document libraries. You co-lead hardening of AFA rules, skills, and sub-agents for solution and AI patterns, and you work daily in Cursor and Claude Code with the squad. The squad ships mainly Python for AI, APIs, and data; you define patterns that remain polyglot when systems span multiple stacks. 


  • Own solution and AI architecture: RAG, AI agents, and LLM-enhanced systems that are observable, testable, and governable—not demo-only. 
  • Define model and data lifecycle from experiment through PoC, pilot, and production: evaluation, drift signals, retention, and classification aligned with security stakeholders. 
  • Run hands-on feasibility using agentic workflows: targeted PoCs (retrieval stacks, evaluation harnesses, integration spikes) driven through Cursor/Claude Code and AFAs where applicable. 
  • Define non-functional requirements and manage technical risk and debt: latency, scale, resilience, security, and cost—with mitigations and sequencing captured in ADRs and fitness assessments. 
  • Create architecture artifacts in Git: C4 and data-flow views as diagram-as-code; infrastructure context with the Cloud Architect; UML or equivalent views where tooling generates them from models or code; threat models as structured, reviewable repository content—not unmanaged documents. 
  • Harden and evolve AFA Cursor rules, agent skills (e.g. design-new-service, evaluate-design, review-pull-request patterns), and sub-agents so AI, API, security, and data standards match Pearson and ELL composable architecture expectations. 
  • Define data architecture: logical and physical models as schema, migrations, and manifests; SQL/NoSQL choices matched to access patterns and privacy constraints. 
  • Shape DevSecOps and quality with the Cloud Architect, DevOps, and QA: CI/CD gates, contract and test expectations; architecture- and security-focused review using AFA pull-request verdict workflows alongside human reviewers. 
  • Set performance budgets and evaluation criteria; support profiling, tracing, and tuning. 
  • Work in Agile delivery: ADRs and Design Decision Records, spikes, and explicit trade-offs with product, security, infrastructure, and customer stakeholders. 
  • Deliver early outcomes: current-state and target-state architecture for an active initiative, expressed as diagram-as-code and ADRs (trust boundaries, non-functional requirements); a prioritized roadmap; threat artifacts for sensitive paths; and clear handover criteria with the Cloud Architect, QA, and DevOps. 

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS


Essential technical skills 

  • Extensive daily use of Cursor (Agent mode, rules, skills) and Claude Code or equivalent agentic CLI for design, implementation support, and review. 
  • Ability to author and refine AFA-style rules and skills (markdown workflows, guardrails) for solution architecture, AI/MCP patterns, and cross-cutting NFRs. 
  • RAG, AI agents, and LLM application architecture; AI model development and lifecycle concepts; deploying and serving models hands-on where needed. 
  • Data lifecycle: sourcing, PII and sensitive data handling, pipelines, and quality. 
  • Deep Python as the squad’s main language for services, AI and ML glue code, evaluation harnesses, and proofs of concept; polyglot ability to design and integrate TypeScript, Go, .NET, or JVM services when initiatives require it. 
  • SQL and NoSQL data stores; cloud-native design with Azure as primary and awareness of AWS where initiatives span both. 
  • C4, diagram-as-code, data-flow and threat modeling expressed as versioned repository artifacts. 


Agile mindset and soft skills 

  • Strong collaboration, technical leadership, teamwork, accountability, organization, and clear communication. 
  • Research-oriented mindset: explore options, measure results, and decide with evidence. 
  • Balance long-term vision with incremental delivery—thin vertical slices, measurable proofs of concept, and trade-offs recorded in ADRs and AFA-friendly checklists. 
  • Facilitate trade-off discussions without becoming a delivery bottleneck. 
  • Gather and refine business intent into technical outcomes in Agile ceremonies and through the backlog. 


Desirable additional skills 

  • Additional language depth beyond Python (e.g. Go, TypeScript, Kotlin/Java, or C#) for performance-critical services, front-end stacks, or partner-team codebases. 
  • Enterprise identity (OIDC/OAuth2) and multi-tenant or customer-hosted trust boundaries. 
  • Contributions to the architectural-fitness-agents repository: rules 01–21 and skills such as assess-domain, design-new-service, implement-remediation. 
  • Regulated environments and audit evidence produced as structured repo artifacts.
