Job description

Overview:

FWI is building a team to support the U.S. Department of Labor in advancing AI skills development through Registered Apprenticeship programs by expanding AI literacy across all industries, growing RA programs in AI-centric occupations, and strengthening the workforce pipeline for AI infrastructure. As the Senior AI Workforce Development Specialist, you will serve as the go-to technical expert helping employers and industry partners understand how AI is changing their workforce — and then build the apprenticeship programs, training standards, and career pathways to keep American workers ahead of the curve.

Work Schedule and Location:

Remote: This part-time remote position will work approximately 29 hours per week.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical assistance to employers, RA sponsors, industry associations, and DOL-funded intermediaries on integrating AI into apprenticeship programs
  • Develop AI-related training modules, curricula, RTI outlines, and work process schedules that sponsors can adopt across industries
  • Work with employers to develop 20+ new AI-centric apprenticeable occupations (think: AI Data Annotator, Prompt Engineer, AI Solutions Specialist)
  • Review and vet at least 25 new occupation requests using the Apprenticeship Occupation Request (AOR) tool
  • Build a framework to increase AI literacy across all RA programs, aligned with DOL's AI Literacy Framework
  • Identify AI infrastructure occupations (electricians, telecom techs, network admins supporting data centers) and help sponsors incorporate AI into their programs
  • Contribute to 5 published reports/papers on topics like AI's industry impact, cost-benefit of AI in RA, and ethical AI guidelines
  • Help plan and lead a national convening with AI experts, industry leaders, training providers, and federal/state agencies
  • Engage with the Department of Education, NSF, and Department of Commerce on AI workforce skills alignment
  • Partner with education systems to build pre-apprenticeship and early career pathways into AI-centric RA programs

 

Qualifications:

Required: 

  • Bachelor's + 8 years of relevant experience, or 10+ years without a degree
  • Deep expertise in the Registered Apprenticeship system — 29 CFR Part 29, program standards development, work process schedules, competency-based and hybrid models, and scaling RA nationally
  • Practical knowledge of AI technologies and how they're being applied across multiple industries — not theoretical, but grounded in what employers actually need
  • Proven ability to convene and engage diverse national stakeholders: C-suite executives, industry associations, unions, workforce boards, education partners, and federal/state agencies
  • Strong technical writing skills for reports, publications, and TA products
  • Experience developing sector-based strategies to expand workforce training programs
  • Ability to juggle competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and incorporate feedback quickly
  •  

Desired: 

  • Prior SME experience on a DOL OA intermediary contract is a strong plus
  • National network of relationships with AI/tech employers and industry groups is preferred
  • Experience with the AOR tool, RAPIDS, CTE alignment, and industry certifications is preferred
