Job Summary: The Associate Field Engineer - Validations plays a critical role in ensuring the quality, accuracy, and successful commissioning of bulk fiber infrastructure within hyperscale data center environments. This position is responsible for supporting the validation, testing, and documentation of large-scale fiber optic installations, ensuring all work meets project specifications, industry standards, and customer acceptance criteria.

Working closely with construction managers, splicing teams, and project field engineers, the Associate Field Engineer will perform and verify fiber testing (OLTS, OTDR), validate installation quality, and support the completion of turnover packages. This role requires a strong attention to detail, technical aptitude, and the ability to operate in high-production environments where schedule adherence and quality are equally critical.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform and support fiber optic validation and testing activities, including OLTS (Tier 1) and OTDR (Tier 2) testing, ensuring compliance with project specifications and industry standards (TIA, BICSI).
  • Review and validate fiber installation quality, including routing, labeling, termination, and splicing, to ensure adherence to approved design and customer requirements.
  • Assist in the development, review, and completion of test result packages and turnover documentation for customer acceptance.
  • Coordinate with splicing and installation crews to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve fiber performance issues or test failures.
  • Track daily production metrics related to testing and validation to ensure alignment with project schedules and throughput targets.
  • Maintain accurate records of fiber counts, test results, and as-built conditions using project documentation systems and software tools.
  • Support commissioning efforts by ensuring all fiber systems meet required performance thresholds prior to handoff.
  • Communicate proactively with field leadership and project teams regarding quality issues, risks, or delays that may impact project timelines.
  • Ensure compliance with all site safety requirements and operational procedures within active construction environments.

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • The required skills in fiber optic testing, validation, and troubleshooting are utilized daily to ensure that installed infrastructure meets strict performance and quality standards. Proficiency with OLTS and OTDR equipment is essential for identifying faults, verifying link performance, and supporting acceptance testing.
  • Knowledge of structured cabling systems, fiber optic installation practices, and industry standards (e.g., ANSI/TIA, BICSI) enables effective validation of field work. The ability to interpret test results, analyze data, and identify root causes of failures is critical in maintaining production efficiency and quality.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills are necessary to coordinate with multiple field teams, document results accurately, and support timely project turnover. Familiarity with data center environments and high-volume fiber deployments enhances the ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, mission-critical settings.
  • Preferred skills include experience with test result software platforms, commissioning processes, and exposure to hyperscale data center builds, which contribute to improved efficiency and continuous quality improvement.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in fiber optic installation, testing, or telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Hands-on experience with fiber testing equipment (OLTS, OTDR) required.
  • Familiarity with TIA/EIA standards, BICSI practices, and data center environments preferred.
  • Experience supporting large-scale or hyperscale projects is highly desirable.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, fiber matrices, and test requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work in a high-production, fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight 50 lbs
  • Ability to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard
  • Ability to verbally communicate to exchange information.
