  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, economics, accounting or related field with at least 18 semester hours of accounting and three years of experience as a Field Auditor or equivalent (transcripts required).
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable; related fields include accounting, finance, tax, public administration.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal tax issues, auditing theories and accounting principles; ability to audit large Fortune 500 companies.
  • Expertise in transfer pricing, IRS Code 482, intercompany documentation and agreements; ability to coordinate with transfer pricing subject matter experts.

Requirements:

  • Conduct independent examinations of financial records of taxpayers with complex audit features, including Fortune 500 corporations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with statutes.
  • Audit complex corporate and franchise tax issues and determine appropriate adjustments based on the accounting records.
  • Facilitate and coordinate audit adjustments under G.S. 105-130.5A and work with contracted transfer pricing SME to analyze findings.
  • Acquire relevant documentation, maintain professional relationships with DOR management, taxpayers, and their representatives, and travel as needed.

The North Carolina Department of Revenue (NCDOR) currently has an opening for an Interstate Field Auditor II position that will act as a Transfer Pricing Subject Matter Expert (SME). This position is full-time remote and may be located inside or outside North Carolina. NCDOR does not provide relocation compensation.

This position may be eligible for a geographic cost-of-living supplement* with the exact rate/percentage dependent on the assigned duty station.

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct independent examinations of financial records of taxpayers that have unique or special audit features or anticipated accounting, tax law, or investigative problems. The audits are complex and include Fortune 500 companies in the incumbent's designated geographical area.

​It is the responsibility of this position to review and audit, in an accurate and thorough manner, tax schedules administered by the Department to ensure they follow the statues and to make appropriate adjustments based on the accounting records available. ​The primary responsibilities and duties of the Transfer Pricing SME can be categorized into two (2) major areas: the auditing of complex corporate and franchise tax issues and the facilitation and coordination of audit adjustments governed under G.S. 105-130.5A, Secretary’s authority to adjust net income.

The individuals selected for this position possess comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles and auditing techniques and has the ability to apply these techniques to audits of large Fortune 500 Corporations. They are also responsible for acquiring relevant, quality documentation, and the coordination of meetings between the Department and the contracted transfer pricing subject matter expert to analyze findings.

This position is expected to maintain a good working relationship with DOR management, auditors, taxpayers and their representatives and tax administration as it relates to IRS code section 482.

Some overnight travel is required throughout the year.

*A geographic cost-of-living supplement ("supplement") is a supplemental wage in addition to, and separate and apart from, base pay where there exists increased costs essential to living in and being assigned to an out-of-state duty station for the convenience of, and by assignment of, the agency. Supplements are based on the cost of living in particular geographic areas, may fluctuate, are subject to change, and are not employee entitlements. Applicable rates/percentages for supplements are established by the North Carolina Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) based on market data and are calculated as a percentage of the position's annual base pay and added to the position's monthly pay.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Demonstrated experience performing independent examination and analysis of sales and use tax and/or complex corporate returns, records, financial statements, and systems for accuracy, completeness and conformance to statutes and rules

  • Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal tax issues, auditing and accounting theories and principles

  • Experience performing, justifying, and defending complex, specialized audits and findings

  • Demonstrated extensive technical expertise in working with large complex (Fortune 500) taxpayers

  • Ability to understand complex corporate structures and IRS code section 482 that regulate transfer pricing between affiliated companies and knowledge of transfer pricing documentation and intercompany legal agreements

Recruitment Range: $70,478 - $123,336

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, accounting or related field with at least eighteen semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience as a Field Auditor or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
