As one of the world's largest solar research institutes, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE makes a substantial contribution to sustainable, economical, safe, and socially just energy supply worldwide. Our goal is to advance the energy transition with concrete, implementable technological solutions - through excellent research results, successful industry collaborations, and startup spin-offs. To this end, we conduct research with our around 1,300 employees in the four focus areas: energy generation, energy distribution, energy storage, and energy use. The Fraunhofer ISE's state-of-the-art R&D infrastructure, with 22,300 m² of laboratory space, enables top-tier research at an international level.
Be part of change
Would you like to play an active role in shaping the energy transition and gain practical experience during your studies? You support our Group "H2 System Analysis and LCA" who contributes that by modelling, simulating and optimizing Hydrogen and Power-to-X systems.
For our group "H2 System Analysis and LCA" we are looking for a student assistant with the opportunity to write a master thesis for the following tasks:
- During your thesis, you model, simulate, and optimize hydrogen and PtX supply chains using our simulation toolbox H2ProSim.
- You research the state of the art in the modeling of Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) as well as Concentrated Solar Power (CSP).
- You develop model extensions towards Direct Air Capture (DAC) and a closed carbon cycle, as well as the use of CSP as a renewable energy source based on existing approaches.
- You analyze results, compare scenarios, and document your work in a transparent manner.
What you contribute
- You are studying a technical or scientific program.
- You have a basic technical understanding and are eager to dive into the innovative field of hydrogen technology; ideally complemented by knowledge in computer science for modeling and simulation (Python/MATLAB/Simulink), enabling you to efficiently analyze complex supply chains.
- You work independently and with commitment and you are experienced in handling technical problem-solving.
- When facing challenges, you show perseverance and do not give up until you have achieved high-quality results.
- It is easy for you to present work that you have carried out independently.
- Ideally, you have already worked with Python, MATLAB, or Simulink and are experienced in programming workflows.
- You can express yourself confidently in German (GER A2-B1) and English (GER B2-C1).
What we offer
- Exclusive insight: By working together with the scientists in our department, you will gain insights into the day-to-day research and development work at a research institute.
- Laboratory infrastructure: At Fraunhofer ISE, we work with state-of-the-art equipment and devices so that research projects can be carried out using the latest technology.
- Research mix: You will have the opportunity to combine experimental work with theory, thus applying and expanding the knowledge you gained during your studies.
- Supervision: You will be supervised by scientists during your work and receive feedback on your progress.
- Teamwork: You will gain experience in working in a team with our scientific and student staff and can contribute the experience you have already gained.
- Working hours and location: We offer you the opportunity to flexibly adjust your working hours to your needs and to occasionally work from home.
- Equal opportunities: We value equal opportunities and embrace diversity.
- After work: Celebrate yourself and your colleagues at after-work events or our annual employee parties.
We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
Ready for a change? Then apply now your detailed application documents (including cover letter, CV, reference/performance record) and make a difference! Once we have received your online application, you will receive an automatic confirmation of receipt. We will then get back to you as soon as possible and let you know what happens next.
