Roles & Responsibilities

  • Associate degree in Accounting, Business, Human Resources, or related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • Minimum 4 years of related payroll experience, preferably in a fast-paced or mid-to-large-sized corporate environment
  • Significant experience processing multi-state payrolls and payroll taxes with a deep understanding of U.S. payroll principles, wage and hour laws, and multi-state tax regulations
  • Strong proficiency in modern payroll and HRIS systems (e.g., Workday, ADP, Paylocity) and advanced Excel skills

Requirements:

  • Process and reconcile weekly and bi-weekly multi-state payrolls and related records, including overtime, shift premiums, commissions, bonuses, benefits, taxes, deductions, and hours
  • Rigorously review pay computations (overtime, 401k, benefits, garnishments, taxes) to ensure absolute accuracy
  • Analyze payroll reports for accuracy, generate ad hoc and standard reports, and respond to payroll inquiries from employees and leaders
  • Collaborate with HRIS/HRBP, Finance, and external partners to resolve complex payroll issues, coordinate audits, and prepare required tax filings, audit reports, and GL reconciliation

Senior Payroll Specialist

North - Remote-Local

For this remote position, candidates must reside within the Eastern or Central Time Zone with priority given to applicants located in the Metro Detroit, MI area.

As our Senior Payroll Specialist, you will take ownership of the accurate preparation, documentation, distribution, and reconciliation of payroll for our 1,100-person U.S. workforce. Working both independently and collaboratively, you will administer our payroll systems and contribute to moderately complex payroll and finance projects.

This role requires a high degree of accuracy, a deep understanding of multi-state U.S. payroll legislation, and a strong customer service mindset to support our employees. 

What you'll do:

  •  Consistently and accurately process companies’ weekly and bi-weekly, multi-state payrolls and maintain payroll records. Activities include, but are not limited to: preparing and distributing payments including overtime, shift premiums, sales commissions and bonuses; process and monitor benefits, taxes, and payroll deductions; and tracking hours. 

  • Rigorously review the computation of pay, overtime, and associated deductions (401k, benefits, garnishments, taxes) to guarantee absolute accuracy. 

  • Process and analyze payroll reports for accuracy; provide reports to appropriate recipients. 

  • Handle inquiries and payroll issues from employees and leaders in a timely and professional manner. 

  • Partner with HRIS, Human Resources Business Partners (HRBP) and/or leaders to resolve complex payroll issues. 

  • Analyze, set-up, maintenance and reconciliation of payroll taxes.  Interact with the Finance department to reconcile general ledger activity involving research and analysis. 

  • Partner and coordinate payroll processing activities and audits with our internal (HR and Finance) and external (vendor and external accounting firms) stakeholders.

  •  Prepare required tax filings, audit reports, and other internal reporting as needed by the Finance and HR teams. 

  • Create and generate ad hoc and standard reports. 

  • Work with external accounting firms to provide data and complete periodic audits. Recommends or participates in the development and implementation of new payroll processes and policies.   

  • Maintain knowledge and compliance with federal, state payroll taxes and 401k regulations. 

  • Process and monitor garnishments and other court ordered deductions.

  • Other tasks as assigned. 

What we need from you: 

  • Associate degree in Accounting, Business, Human Resources, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience). 

  • Minimum 4 years of related payroll experience, preferably within a fast-paced or mid-to-large-sized corporate environment. 

  • Significant experience processing multi-state payrolls and payroll taxes. 

  • Deep understanding of U.S. payroll principles, wage and hour laws, and multi-state tax regulations. 

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently while being a strong collaborative partner to the broader HR and Finance teams.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify errors. 

  • Strong time management and organizational skills. 

  • Strong proficiency in modern payroll and HRIS systems (e.g., Workday, ADP, Paylocity).

  • Advanced Excel skills.

  • Proficient in Google Sheets and other office applications/tools.

Salary range: $60,000-$85,000
