Roles & Responsibilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration or plan to become registered within two years
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in power system protection, controls engineering, and relay settings for a senior role (10+ years for a principal role)
  • Experience with system modeling and fault analysis software (ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, or EasyPower) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Requirements:

  • Design, specify, calculate settings, and coordinate protective relays and relay control schemes across transmission, distribution, generation, and renewable energy sources; develop protective schemes and related logic
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance; present solutions to clients and respond to technical concerns in real time
  • Perform protection system analysis and testing activities including short-circuit analysis, time-current coordination, step-distance coordination, test planning, commissioning assistance, protection system event analysis, troubleshooting, and developing NERC PRC compliance materials
  • Collaborate with cross-functional groups to develop and implement technical protection solutions while ensuring conformance with industry standards, company policies, and client requirements

Overview:

We are seeking a Relay Settings and System Protection Engineer to join the team. If you have 5+ years of experience in power systems protection, we encourage you to read more about this exciting opportunity. This position can be remote within the US or based in one of the following locations:

 

  • Orlando, FL
  • Kennesaw, GA (Suburb of Atlanta) 
  • Nashville, TN
  • Spring, TX (Suburb of Houston)
  • This position is also open to other ENERCON locations and remote within the US
Responsibilities:

In this dynamic role, you'll design and optimize protective relay systems, drive technical excellence, and deliver innovative solutions across diverse energy sources while ensuring compliance and empowering teams.

 

  • Protective Relay Design & Coordination: Design, specify, calculate settings, and coordinate protective relays and relay control schemes. Develop and maintain logic schemes in protective relays and power system specific logic controllers. Develop protection schemes including transmission, distribution, generation, and renewable energy sources
  • Technical Leadership & Guidance: Provide technical guidance to other engineers. Confidently and comfortably present technical solutions to clients, respond in real time to technical concerns and answer questions in a knowledgeable, articulate manner
  • Analysis, Testing & Compliance: Perform short-circuit analysis, time-current coordination, step-distance coordination, develop relay settings, prepare test plans, provide commissioning assistance, perform protection system event analysis and troubleshooting, and develop NERC PRC compliance materials. Ensure all relay settings activities, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with industry standards, the company’s established policies and objectives, and with client standards
  • Collaboration & Solution Implementation: Collaborate with the appropriate groups and individuals to develop and implement technical solutions #LI-MB1 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
  • Professional Engineering registration or plan to become registered within two years
  • Typically requires at least 5 years of relevant experience in power system protection & controls engineering and relay settings for a senior role, and 10 plus years of experience for a prinicpal role
  • Proven experience in system modeling and fault analysis software (ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, or EasyPower), and Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, and Power Point). Experience with Mathcad is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of relay coordination studies, and development of associated protective relay settings for systems ranging from 12.47 kV to 345 kV is required. Experience with 500 kV and 765 kV systems is a plus
  • Experience applying protection system engineering practices and principles in the following areas: transmission line, bus, transformer, capacitor bank, reactor bank, feeder, generator, motor, and communication assisted protection schemes
  • Familiar with the application of NERC PRC standards for compliance
  • Must have strong analytical skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; must effectively communicate 
  • Highly motivated "self‐starter" with a strong commitment to maintaining strong client relationships
  • Strong document management and organizational skills
  • Experience with SCADA, communication systems, and network engineering is a plus
Pay Range: USD $123,000.00 - USD $193,000.00 /Yr. Additional Information:

When salary range is listed it reflects typical compensation for this role based on level and location. Actual pay depends on experience, skills, and education.
