Job description


Our client is seeking to contract with a highly capable and motivated Component Engineer to interface with suppliers, specifically on the development of the Primary and Intermediate Sodium Pumps. This position reports to the System Design Manager and is focused on integrating and coordinating the work of the client's engineers and system suppliers, fostering a collaborative working relationship, and ensuring hardware design meets design intent. Specifically, this position will be embedded at our Pump Supplier in Burlington, VT as a resident engineer.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of first of multiple large nuclear fluid pumps through design and manufacture.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities, ensuring project teams meet scope, technical performance, and schedule expectations.
  • Provide oversight to partners and subcontractors developing mechanical system designs for the Natrium reactor.
  • Provide technical direction and oversight of supplier projects, working with the Contract Administrator and Supplier Project Engineer to ensure delivery of data and other deliverables, as well as coordination and performance of technical reviews of deliverables.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces and handoffs between client's, partners, and interfacing project teams to enable cohesive design and fabrication strategies.
  • Identify, communicate, and help resolve emerging technical issues and risks, ensuring Engineering and Project Management are consistently informed.
  • Identify and ensure effective application of correct design codes into the design of plant systems such as ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, etc.
  • Support planning efforts and maintain schedule adherence for design activities within a system, as well as their integration with an overall plant design delivery schedule.
  • Interface with the design team to create and manage drawing packages of system designs, including but not limited to Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), 3D models, and system interface drawings.
  • Establish and maintain system requirements and specification documents, such as Engineering Design Specifications for major plant equipment.
  • Propose, initiate, and oversee testing programs for plant system qualification, as needed.
  • Generate design package for systems, sub-systems, and equipment designs including coordination of calculations, design reports, mechanical drawings, and engineering design specifications.

Key Qualifications and Skills:

  • B.S. in Mechanical or related discipline from an accredited university and 10+ years direct experience with proven mechanical systems skills.
  • Experience with component design and manufacture.
  • Supplier/Contractor coordination and project management experience required.
  • Experience with full hardware lifecycle, from cradle to grave.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated experience in fluid and structural analysis, tolerance analysis, and the ability to read engineering drawings.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence.
  • Candidate must be a self-starter and possess ability to coordinate and lead a design team's effort with minimal direction.
  • Ability to handle projects that include many competing objectives and design constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives.
  • Ability to work on simultaneous tasks that require a multi-disciplinary approach.
  • The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.
  • Actual position starting level and title will be determined based on assessment of qualifications.
